I have a polaroid scanner and it scans the variety of negatives I
have shot over the years pretty well. The scans show the same film
type of characteristics that I choose the film for in the first place.
Fine grain films are sharp and smooth and rather shorter scaled and
higher speed films are longer scaled with open tones and a bit of
  grain.
Did you buy the camera to start shooting new negatives to scan with
the polaroid machine? Are you going to just make digital prints? Or
do you need the negative to make siver prints?
If you plan to just make digital prints I think the time is right for
an all digital work flow...skip the negs altogether.
If you are going to make silver prints then of course you need the
  film.
I don't think you need to take into consideration what the scanner
can handle as it seems to do just fine with all of the different
stocks. I think you should choose a film based on what you want your
photos to look like. If you are just starting out with photography,
go to a lot of exhibits-see what you like than find out how they were
done. Sounds like copying, but if you us this idea as a starting
point you will be able to determine which direction you need to go.
Sorry if this is too obvious-

I have the polaroid sprintscan 120. It is one of the 3 medium
format dedicated film scanners that include the minolta dimage
pro, the nikon coolscan 8000, and the polaroid sprintscan 120.
I bought it because i got a pretty good demo at calumet in los
angeles. The person at samys in L.A. could not get the minolta to
demo correctley. I don't have it yet but the polaroid definitely
should be used with the optional glass neg holder. I personally
think the glass holder should be part of the standard accessory
pack and not optional.
At the time i bought ,it was between 500-800 less than the nikon
and minolta and there was 300 rebate. Actually I think any of the
3 scanners are good, i went for price and am very happy with the
scans. It's not as good as the drum scans I purchase from
Bowhaus- and im not such an experienced scanner user to
really appreciate the fine nuances of good scanning. I get
workable histograms and really really sharp prints.(unsharp
masking @ 150%, .7-.9 radius). I paid extra for the silverfast
which i found to be incomprehensable.
