B&W printing options for small volume user

2003-02-02 by markjamesfisher <markjamesfisher@yahoo.c

I am slowly coming around to realizing that my wet darkroom days are
numbered given the incredible control I have with digital
manipulation. I print maybe once a week and might go a few weeks not
printint at all. I went to a seminar that described the clogging
issues around the Piezo inks especially when used less frequently.
Now for the question --- what is the best quality system that I can
use while still providing reasonable (whatever that means!)
reliability.

Sorry if this is covered in the archieves, but my searches came up
dry.

Thanks -- Mark

The newer PiezoTone inks do not clog in my experience. As an example I fired
up one of my 1160 printers loaded with the PiezoTone WN inks after it had
not been used for 3 months. Perfect nozzle checks first time and I was away
printing from the start.

I'm sure others will chime in with experiences of other inks, especially the
MIS inks which are considerably cheaper, but regardless all that is usually
needed between uses, no matter how long, is often just one or two head cleans
perhaps followed by letting the printer sit for a few hours. I have never
had to resort to more than that and I've had printers sitting for months at
a time.

You need to decide on print size before you can decide which printer is best
for you. Also where you live in the world determines what printers are
currently available new. Here in the UK for example the 1160, an excellent
and relatively cheap performer, is still available new. It has long since
been discontinued elsewhere.
