I just tried some of the smooth pearl with the 2200 (UC inks, photo
black). I also have no custom profile for this paper so as a first
try I used the Pictorico Dualside Photo Paper profile
(https://www.pictorico.com/Secure/content/cb.asp?cbid=129) and their
suggested workflow for dualside. The surface characteristics of
these two papers are somewhat similar (both have a microceramic
surface) but the Ilford smooth pearl has more surface sheen. Print
characteristics were similar for both the Pictorico dualside and
Ilford smooth pearl using the dualside profile. Very nice, deep
blacks and minimal bronzing (barely visible only when paper is held
at a certain angle to the light source) compared to the Epson luster
or semimatte papers which do exhibit severe bronzing. There is of
course some metamerism with B&W prints and the UC inks which
manifests itself in this case as a slight green cast in daylight, but
neutral under incandescent lighting (typical for the all of the
Pictorico profiles). I like the surface characteristics and weight
of the Ilford Smooth Pearl better than the Pictorico Dualside and
also the Ilford paper is not as expensive. I may have to bite the
bullet and get IP 5 to get rid of the metamerism problems with the UC
inks.
