In my opinion, it is the simplest of the quadtone printing methods. It
is also a very good system. The printing should take just hours to
work out. If you trying to learn all the components of a digital
workflow (scanning, calibration, photoshop, etc) then there is _lots_
to learn but the piezo plug-in itself is very straight forward.
When people develop alternate workflows (also very good and usually
with specific enhancements) they will often compare it to the piezo
driver -- in a sense it is used as a standard to measure against.

I'm not aware of the controversy (and don't want to hear innuendo or
speculation) except that he says controversial things periodically. I'm
not concerned about continued use of his software.
