Yahoo! appears to be Experiencing a meltdown...
2003-02-24 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service
Apparently their groups are progressively disappearing without explanation... I run several groups, one of which has disappeared in the manner described by the attached... This has gotten worse, with archives and groups disappearing on a progressive and ongoing basis since last Tuesday.. The first item following is a post I made to a moderator's group (that has no, itself, disappeared... LOL) Followed by another e-mail to that same group that made it through before it died... I would suggest downloading the member list for the group just in case.. ---------------------------- Apparently, YAHOO! doesn't read it's own notices... I follow THEIR directions and get a canned response saying to go elsewhere!?

I'm the owner of the list. when I try to go to the messages via the web
interface, I get the following:
"The list HP-inkjet is temporarily unavailable"
Then if I try and release pending messages, I get:
"We're sorry, but we were unable to complete your request at this time.
If you continue to receive this error for more than 48 hours, please
contact our Customer Support staff at support@yahoogroups.com
. We apologize for this
inconvenience. "
"Right now the list seems to clearly violate the implicit warranty
of fitness for use intended." I'd like an answer as to what the
heck is going on and a a FIX ASAP..

Subject: Support for .PNG files?
Due to Unisys' draconian patent enforcement, we recently switched our
entire website from .GIF's to '.PNG's. However in doing so it of
course broke the link to the picture on our Yahoo!Group.
No problem, thinks I; I'll just go and point it to the new file.
But Yahoo does not allow any photos to be linked to/uploaded unless
they are .JPG's or .GIF format. I am not willing to expose us to
patent infringement suits, so I was wondering if anyone else had
tried to contact them about changing this policy? If not I will try
to get the ball rolling myself...
Regards,
David

"Unisys is not asking for any licenses in relation to GIF data files, but only for software implementing the LZW algorithm. Most commercial applications that create GIF files already have a GIF/LZW license from Unisys."
http://cloanto.com/users/mcb/19950127giflzw.html
"GIF files are not covered by the patent. There is no risk in distributing GIF files or in using the GIF name. According to a CompuServe spokesperson, "Recent discussions of GIF taxes and fees are totally without merit. For people who view GIF images, who keep GIF images on servers, or who are creating GIF images for distribution, the recent licensing discussions have no effect on their activities." http://cloanto.com/users/mcb/19950127giflzw.html
Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.
