Quick Question,

Anyone on the list seen a high quality photo print from any canon
printer? IS IT AS GOOD as the epson
1280, 2200?

Only reason I never considered the canon was you can't print panoramas.

Jerry

How about CIS Systems? Made for the Canon?

Hi Jerry,

I have a Canon S9000 that I use for proofing, glossies etc. The quality of the prints is every bit as good as the 1280 in my opinion. If you like I'll send you a print, better yet send me an image file of something that you know how it will print - say a dye based color on glossy or eem and I'll send you one on the same paper from the Canon.

I sure hope all of the hype about pigment B&W for the Canon rings true since that has been the major negative for that printer for me.

Jerry,

I have owned a Canon S800 for over a year on which I do all my colour
printing. Absolutely superb output. Apparently the new i950 is even better
but I'm so happy with my current model I see no reason to upgrade.

There is s CIS system made by weink (www.weink.com) I believe although I
never looked into it because my volume is not really enough to justify one.
There may be other systems out there by now - I'm a bit out of touch.

Roger, I never use glossy paper. How's the quality on Eclipse Satine, Legion
Photo Matte, or EAM (EEM now)? How about Black and white Prints, which is
what I would use it for, mostly, and how about the price of ink? I don't use
dye inks, just MIS VM for black and white and Generations 4 for color.

Hi Jerry,

The quality on EAM/EEM is very good. I haven't tried EcSAT with it but I can run a quick profile and give it a try. I haven't used expensive fine art paper with the S9000 since it seems a waste with dye based inks. It does very nice black only prints (much much better than my Epson 1200) but the Canon OEM inks are all dye based. The attractive thing about Jon Cone's new what ever it may be is a set of pigment based black & grays for B&W printing. Plus if he can come up with a pigment based color set that has a reasonable gamut that would be a whole new ball game. I would probably dump my 1200 and pick up another S9000. I haven't found a CIS/CFS for the Canon I would buy as of this time but I suspect that will change fairly soon, especially if the new Cone inks are a success.

The quality of the image produced by the Canon is excellent. The Canon OEM inks go for about 10 - 11 bucks a slot so a full set would be about $66.00 I have no idea what Cone is going to charge for his but you can bet it won't be cheap. I would hope that MIS will rise to the challenge and bring out a more reasonable competitive product that will function with the Canon technology. I certainly am very satisfied with MIS FSN on my 860 and can't see spending three times as much for the Piezotones.

At this time I use the Canon mainly as a proof printer, card printer and for snap shots and do serious color with my 1200 and the MIS perpetuals. If pigmented inks become available for the S9000 and they work then that will probably change quickly. The Canon is so much faster than the 1200.

So, at this time I could only provide you with a print made with dye based ink but it would give you a good idea about the quality of the image that the S9000 can produce. I will certainly spring for the new Cone B&W kit and put the printer through its paces with a number of different papers. Problem is when will it hit the street and be generally available to other than a select few.

Roger.

Thanks for the quick reply Roger,

I guess its a bit early to think about the canon printer. I have always
liked canon products, but dye inks just won't do it. I can't understand why
canon is so far behind epson in black and white print technology.
I need the CIS, as I print a lot of prints, and $66 for a cartridge set is
ridiculous. Same would go for anything cone put out. His inks were way over
priced, and probably will continue to be. I've had great with MIS VM inks,
and I'm sure their new Ultrachrome replacement inks will be a great product.
It should begin shipping this month. Ever notice how ordinary Higgins Black
India Ink is only about $8 per pint? I know its not usable in printers, but
the inkjet inks shouldn't be more than about 3 times that much. Cone's $80
for four ounces is really way out of line. That's $320 per pint for ink!
