Hi Julian. I tried a 2 sheet sample. The only thing I didn't like was
it's too yellow/ivory for me. Other than that it's a beautiful paper.
The Eclipse is pure white, and seems to me to be of equal quality. Both
seem to have a nice black. I still feel that the paper with the deepest
black is Torchon/Museum Parchment/Royal Riviera. But that texture! For
the people who like a slightly warmer paper, the photo rag is a winner.
(at least the 2 prints I made were great!).

Wonder why Museum Parchment costs so much more than Royal Riviera? Its
the same paper!!

[Digital BW] Eclipse & Coatings

2001-09-21 by Robert G. Morrison

Just a quick note to say that while Eclipse apparently (I haven't seen one)
gives good blacks with the MIS VM ink set it does not give good blacks with
Piezo. My comments about Eclipse with piezo are for coated prints
only...where it has really nice blacks and gives the most neutral piezo
print I have ever seen...it is really, really nice. What's nicest is with
my coating, the Eclipse print doesn't look plastic. It seems that the
coating melds with the paper...but you get the black enhancement. In
contrast the same coating on Museo (a paper with a similar texture) tends to
sit on top...you get more gloss...which some may like.

I have been lobbying Jon to try to get him to profile Eclipse because I
think that's where the problems are with the uncoated black dmax. I did an
experiment the other night. I printed a piezo flush image and then double
printed the flush on half the image. I don't have a densitometer and
Antonis is away...but I'd say that the double printed piezo black patch on
Eclipse is the most neutral and strongest black I've ever seen in a
piezo/paper combination. Most papers when you double print the black
saturates...but with Eclipse the paper didn't saturate until I triple
printed. I think when Jon profiles this paper we will have a real winner.
For those that want more texture the Eclipse satine has it with the same
paper coating.

Robert

PS Photoinkjet.com didn't pay me to say this...I just really like the
paper.

I was quite enjoying that the paper was whiter than my usual Wells River or
Museo! You really are a perfectionist Jerry! I don't want to try anything
else new at the moment - it takes too much time (and money!) for me to get
to grips with new papers, but I'll try th eEclipse next.

Re: [Digital BW] 4Jerry photorag

2001-09-21 by Jerry Olson

Hi Julian,

Yup, just call me Picky. I think I've spent way too much money over the
last year trying so many different kind of papers. I've kind of boiled
it down to 3 or 4, and I'm quite pleased with them. I'm not going to be
testing many more, I'll just be printing.

If someone on the list comes out with a great recommendation, I suppose
I'll try it, 'cause I'm always curious, and hoping for even better
quality. But truly, the quality is so good now, If I don't find anything
better, I'll still be happy.

Jerry.

Jerry,

Were those two sheets of Photo Rag preproduction? The stuff I ordered
and received was whiter than the original samples I saw. It's not as
white as Eclipse with the MIS VM but the blacks are on the level of
Torchon. Highligts remind me of Ansco 130 developed ILford Galarie

Hi Martin,

Yes I think they were pre production. Someone on the list sent them to
me to try. I think it was steadman.
