Horrible banding with new 1280 and eboni ink

Horrible banding with new 1280 and eboni ink

2003-03-18 by Jerry Olson

Daniel,

I'm about to try this myself today. I still can't get a good nozzle
check after all this time. Every other time I run a cleaning, i either
get a horrible nozzle check or a fairly good one, meaning about 20 lines
are still missing. Next cleaning, and there's about 80 lines missing,
then about 20, then 80 and so on. It isn't the same lines that are
missing each time either, so the nozzles are plugging up, then clearing,
then plugging, then clearing, etc. I can't imagine what would cause this.

RE: [Digital BW] Horrible banding with new 1280 and eboni ink

2003-03-19 by Ed Mathews

Same exact problem with my new 1280. I can make about 1 good print then
I get banding from the clogs and have to wait a few hours for it to
clear again. After I use up all the MIS ink I'm going to buy some new
Epson cartriges and then send it back to Epson.

Thanks,
Ed

Sigh! I just need new ink and now I'm stuck... Ed, are you using a CIS/CFS
as well or plain cartridges? Is there any chance that these problems are
only related to CIS/CFS and may not appear if one fills standard cartridges
(as I do)?

No, I've only used carts. First, the original ones that came with the
printer, and then this set of VM ink from MIS. Same problem with both,
and only on the black head.

Thanks,
Ed

Re: [Digital BW] Horrible banding with new 1280 and eboni ink

2003-03-19 by Jerry Olson

I put the OEM epson carts back in my 1280 and got a perfect nozzle check
right away. So this would indicate to me it is not a printer problem,
and since most of us have been using the MIS inks for years without any
major problems, it's probably not an ink problem, unless we got a bad
batch of ink. (IF WE DID get a bad batch of ink, how would we ever know
it?) Its Probably the cartridges. I wish I understood exactly how
cartridges worked, how they absorb ink, and the rules that have to be
followed in order for them to work properly. I'd cut one open, except
they're too expensive to do that. The last CIS unit that I had loaded
exactly as it should have, but there was nothing but clogging. There was
no air in the tubes at all that I could see. I even drew 30 cc's of ink
through the bottom of the cartridges, so they should have been
thoroughly soaked with ink. Still nothing but clogs. And several people
have reported that there's nothing wrong with the Eboni ink.

Could it be that MIS changed their ink formulas enough that it would no
longer be compatible with Epson brand inks? If that were the case, it
could explain a lot!

I think a new technology would be nice. Something other than inkjet.
Just think of all the money we have wasted with banding and clogging
problems over the years.

Jerry

Re: [Digital BW] Horrible banding with new 1280 and eboni ink

2003-03-19 by Eileen Chun

Jerry,

I have just installed the Black & White Ultra Tones in 1280 system last
night. I did not use a CIS system for this, as I wanted to try the ink
in cartridges first. I filled them last night, ran a test purge print,
and got banding on half of the six stripes. I let the cartridges sit
overnight, and before I left for work tried it again. I still got
banding, but now it is on all the stripes. I am that concerned as this
was similar to the banding I was getting when I was running a CIS
(Niagara G4 ink) on the 1280 prior. In the end, the ink settled when I
left it alone for about a week (as prior posts have indicated), ran a
couple of cleaning/nozzle checks, and everything was fine from that
point forwards with a few nozzle checks when I didn't use the printer
for awhile.

Perhaps, I am jumping the gun with this inkset that it shows great
promise, but I am very hopeful that this new ink(at least for me) set
will work out well.

Eileen

Ah! So you're saying you got banding also with the original Epson cart? That
should prove it's not the inks... Well, I'm jumping in, placed my order a
few minutes ago, and will keep fingers crossed.

thanks,
alessandro

No, I've only used carts. First, the original ones that came with the
printer, and then this set of VM ink from MIS. Same problem with both,
and only on the black head.

Re: [Digital BW] Horrible banding with new 1280 and eboni ink

2003-03-19 by Jerry Olson

Eileen, did you get the entire set of ultratones, or just the eboni
black? If you order the 4.3 version of MIS VM inks, are you getting ultratones?

Anyone know the difference between the two inks on the actual finished print?

I did let the printer set for 3 days, but the banding problem was worse
than ever. I'm trying a new set of carts and inks now, and we'll see
what happens. Reinstalling the OEM color inks took ALL the banding and
clogs away.

Something got mixed up somewhere alessandro...

I had no problems with OEM carts, they are the solution to unclogging
your printheads. They clean out the printheads.

No, I had NO problems with the original carts. they clear up the
problem. I did at first, but I let them set an hour after installation
while I went to dinner. No clogs at all when I came back. Takes a few
minutes for the ink to get through the heads, I guess.

Sorry Jerry, two threads going on with the same subject. My post was an
answer to this message from Ed:

"No, I've only used carts. First, the original ones that came with the
printer, and then this set of VM ink from MIS. Same problem with both,
and only on the black head.

Thanks,
Ed

BTW, I can understand your utter frustration: I spent over a month trying to
get my 1160 back to work after a long period of inactivity, and finally
resolved to spend 50 bucks on a set of OEM inks and got my nozzle checks
back to order. Now I ordered this new Eboni (with FS grays), and I hope that
everything will be fine.
Don't give up, see you somewhere in the next print exchanges :-)

Am Glad that a weeks setting cleared everything up Eileen. I suppose if
I have these problems again I can try it. Seems like a long way to go to
fix a problem that should have been fixed years ago by the people who
sell these things!

RE: [Digital BW] Horrible banding with new 1280 and eboni ink

2003-04-14 by Alessandro Pardi

Three weeks later, here comes the report: after a few test prints with the
OEM inks, I switched seamlessly to the FS carts, printed just one purge page
(you know, a large patch of the 4 inks) and then everything was fine.
Note: I'm using MIS FS inkset (regular, not FS-N), but they include now the
new Eboni black, which was suspected of clogging. And, I have no CIS/CFS,
just virgin carts which I fill with loving care.
I'm in the process of printing a 25 images portfolio, so if you won't read
anything else from me in the next week you can assume that either everything
went fine or that my message was censored ;-)
