Are UltraTones ready for prime time?

Are UltraTones ready for prime time?

2003-03-22 by Charles Bandes

Hi guys -

So I _really_ want to switch my 1280 over to the UltraTone inks. But I'm a little leery of the "no guarantees" policy over at MIS right now.

What's the general feeling you all have about these inks at the moment? Is it risky to try them, or is MIS just doing a CYA manouvre at the moment with inks that really are as good as they should be?

I've been quite happy with the standard VM inks thus far, but I'm dying to be able to print on glossy/semigloss materials (FWIW, I really like the Pictorico glossy paper, which comes pretty close to a silver-print feel, imho)

Also - can anyone give me an idea of how difficult it will be to run the two different blacks on one printer with this system? I'll probably mostly be working with the photo black, but I don't want to lose access to fine-art papers, so the eboni will be necessary sometimes. I get the feeling that I'd need to manually refill carts to do this - big deal? not a big deal? (I know this has been answered before, I'm just nervous, please forgive me :) )

I am also a happy user of the VM set in a CIS. But, I'd like to
make the switch. This clogging issue has me holding off.

My concern is that while the new inks may work in a prefilled
cartridge, I would like to use my nomorecarts CIS. This CIS has
worked flawlessly with the VM set for the past year. I'm
wondering if there is a clogging issue with prefilled vs. CIS
systems with the new inks.

About the only Eboni information I can add at this point is that I
recently (march 3) bought a prefilled hex set of the VM inks to use
while I wait for the new inks to be released.

The MIS site states that as of March 1, Eboni was replacing the
existing black in this set. So, while I can't be sure which black ink
I'm using at present, it may be the Eboni.

I haven't had any clogging trouble with this cartridge set.

Jeff

Knock on wood, I have been using the VM Ultratones with the Photo Black (for
semigloss) via a CIS for the last week and have not experienced any
"clogging" problems. I did have to pull extra ink through the carts the
night I charged the CIS carts, but I feel that was just a function of my
cart charging abilities as opposed to anything with the ink.

The system has been sitting for a few days, so tomorrow I will use it a bit
and see how it does after sitting for a while.

How is the print quality with photo black/semigloss? Are you using
Ilford Smooth Pearl?

Doug, If I pulled, say 40 CCs of ink or so through the bottom of the CIS
cartridges to get them filled with ink, would that work? I got another
bad batch of carts (Third one in a row), that won't hold a vacuum.

If you fill the cartridges this way, there probably won't be a true
vacuum in there, but the carts will certainly be saturated with ink.
Would you HAVE to have a vacuum?

Thanks,

Jerry

>>Doug, If I pulled, say 40 CCs of ink or so through the bottom of the CIS

Sorry to hear your still having problems. The short answer to your question
is that I don't know. At this point, it couldn't hurt.

Didn't I read that you just got these carts today? If so and they aren't
working, pull the ink through them, then insert them in the printer and let
them sit until tomorrow afternoon before ever even using them. That would
be my suggestion.

>>If you fill the cartridges this way, there probably won't be a true vacuum

It has worked for me. "Priming" may be a better term than vacuum. My
theory was to get a bunch of ink in the cart so that when the print head
tries to charge with the new ink, there is plenty of ink in there to "prime
the pump." If there isn't enough ink to fully saturate the sponge, I would
think it would be hard to "prime" things. I am sure there are people on
this list who know the technical aspects better than I do, so I will let
them jump in and set us straight.

Thanks Doug.

I have nothing to lose, so will do this. If there is enough ink in
there, I wouldn't think there would be room for any air anywhere.

Jerry,

There is a full write up about how to fix this problem on the MIS web
site.

You may want to spend some time reading the trouble shooting guide.
It is quite helpfull or call tech support at MIS.
