A4 printer with MIS VM Quadtone Inks

A4 printer with MIS VM Quadtone Inks

2003-03-27 by Richard Vanek

Dear friends,

I tried to look in archive to find answers, but I didn't succeed. I
would like to ask you for suggestion:

I like to buy Epson printer for A4 prints with MIS VM ink. I would
like to choose printer which is currently on market. I do not know if
I should go for 4 inks or 6 inks. And I must say I am lost between
model numbers which are discussed here (most US) and the ones I can
buy in Europe.

I was thinking about Epson 890, but that one is out of market and
can't buy it anymore.

I also like to try first with cartridges and later on with CIS if I
am satisfied with results.

I do not know which printer need what kind of complexity of
modifications for CIS.

And I am not really sure what kind of printer has support for
workflow using MIS VM inks.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hi Richard,

As a proud new owner of an Epson 1280, which is a 13"x19" printer, I
really recommend it for black and white printing as well as color. I
have the MIS-VM inkset and like it very much. This is a 6 ink
printer that will give you smooth skies and skin tones. I just got
it 24March2003 off ebay auction site . I think the model numbers in
Europe run differently than US, but you can log on Epson website and
see what the matching models are. I think the 1270 or 1290 match the
1280. Hope this helps, and by the way; you can choose the different
resolutions to print your images. 360dpi, 720dpi, 1440dpi, or
2880superphoto dpi.

I believe is 1290, we have also 1290S and I do not know difference.

But anyway are you using cartridges from MIS or CIS? I have read
somewhere that you need to do some hardware modification to printer
to use CIS.

Hi Richard,

I use the cartriges from MIS and plan to do my own refilling as it
costs much less than replacing the whole cartridge when it runs
empty. One $16 4 ounce bottle replaces the color of ink about 12-16
times, making it about $1.00 per color per refill or $5.00 per
cartridge refill. I don't know if CIS needs hardware modification,
just a table or space beside the printer and on the same level as the
printer to put a box or something to hold the bottles of ink. The
tubing is run from the bottles and attached to some kind of tubing
holder attachment to keep them from flopping around inside the
printer cavity. If you get the cartridges, be sure to get the chip
ink resetter device so you can refill them and use the same
cartridges over and over again. One thing I have heard about
refilling is to keep in mind the cartridges will collect ink foam and
air bubbles that will make it look like you have a clogged nozzle.
The solution to that is to use a syringe and an attachment that MIS
sells and suck out the ink foam. The foam can be put back into its
same ink bottle it came out of and used as ink again. The bubble just
bursts and leaves behind the same ink.

Your friend in photography,
