AFAIK, it depends on the lens design. Some maintain focus (most likely the
ones that doesn't change length when zooming and focus internally), some
not... I'm sure there will be more competent answers than mine.

Regards,
Loris.

It depends upon the particular lens..

Your image will stay in focus if you are using a TRUE ZOOM..If you are using
a VARI-FOCAL LENS (confusingly still referred to as a "ZOOM") you WILL have
to re-focus as you zoom..

Re: [Digital BW] FOCUS QUESTION

2003-04-09 by Jerry Olson

Always zoom in and focus if you are going to shoot at a telephoto
distance. I've never yet seen a camera
where you can focus at wide angle and zoom to telephoto and keep the
sharpness. If you shoot wide angle,
focus at the wide angle setting.

Re: [Digital BW] FOCUS QUESTION

Ed, I've had dozens of zoom lenses over the years, Nikon, Canon, Tokina,
Sigma, Leica, etc. NONE maintained
sharpness if you focused at the wide angle position, and then zoomed way
in. (However the Autofocus will refocus
for you), but if you were in manual mode, it just didn't work.
