Converting image file for quad printing w/o Photoshop?

Converting image file for quad printing w/o Photoshop?

2001-09-23 by weaver@corvusdev.com

I bought a set of the MIS quad inks for an old, large-format Epson
(Stylus Pro XL) but am not able to make use of any of the suggested
photoshop 'workflows' -- since I don't have Photoshop (and don't
intend to shell out $500 or whatever to print B&W on this printer).
Does anyone know is there any cost-effective image editor out there
that can use Photoshop curve files?

If you are at all serious about digital imaging, an investment in Photoshop
will pay for itself in many ways. Photoshop is _the_ core application for
image editing, manipulation and creation. Yeah, $500-600 is a lot of cash
to lay down, but there is nothing that can touch Photoshop. Regardless of
what printer you use, if you spend anytime at all with images you WILL
appreciate having Photoshop! --No if's, and's or but's!

You might want to update your printer! That printer is about 110 models
out of date! Photoshop LE or Photo Elements may be able to use those
curves, but I'm not sure about that!

Oh, I do have a newer printer, too (an Epson 875DC) but I thought I'd
see what I could get out of the Stylus Pro Xl in terms of large-
format quad-tone prints. But the printer really isn't the issue
here -- the problem I'm having is properly preparing the image for
printing.

Photoshop LE does not support curves. Check with Adobe to
see if the new Adobe PhotoElements does. I think it retails for
around $100.

My recollection is that both programs do support curves but only in RGB, and
not in CMYK, LAB, or any other color space.

Photoshop Elements does not have Curves, but LE does.
