Soft gloss paper for 2200?

Soft gloss paper for 2200?

2003-04-30 by eleanor77027

Does anyone know of a paper (that doesn't brongz badly) that comes
very
close to air dryed silver papers that I can use for black and white
printing on
my 2200 ? The closest thing I have found is the Epson Professional
Glossy
but it is fairly lightweight and I would like something a little
heavier. Kodak
Ultima Satin is heavier wt. and has a great surface but the ink from
the 2200
doesn't work well with this Kodak paper. I don't like any paper that
has even a
small stipple pattern (ie: epson semi gloss, luster, etc.)

Thanks! Eleanor Brown

Eleanor,

you realize you are asking for the holy grail of digital bw printing! We've
discussed these before... look at Ilford and upcoming Oriental as promising.
Search the archives here for more. Personally, I don't know of any paper that
has the look and feel of the silver prints on glossy /air dried fiber paper.

At this point Epson Pro Glossy is as close as it gets.
As Antonis mentioned the next candidate will be Oriental's Fiber-Based Gloss
paper which is due out at the end of the summer and is being designed to
have a surface similar to their fiber-based photo gloss papers with the
identical backing paper. They are specifically designing the paper to work
with the Ultrachromes and Epson Archival Pigments (10000).

In the meantime I'm dry mounting Epson Pro Glossy which seems to be a pretty
good solution...but probably not archival beyond 50 years.

Robert, do you know if Oriental has solved the bronzing problem with
the
Ultrachrome Inks? the Epson Pro Glossy almost has it solved, but not
quite. also,
you say you are dry mounting the pro Glossy? Do you have a
blistering problem with
the heat? I've never had any luck dry mounting ink jet papers (excpt
matte) even at
low heat settings. but then, I've never dry mounted the pro Glossy
either. Eleanor

No I don't, but that is what I believe they are working on now.

No problem with 170.

Eleanor-

The best I've used is PictoRico Photo Gallery Glossy paper...some of
their others are good, too and they publish free profiles for them.

Tom,

Is this a high-gloss paper or more like the medium gloss that you get in an
air-dried silver print? Have you seen the Epson Pro Glossy? I'm wondering
how they compare in terms of gloss, texture and bronzing. From the
description on their web page I get the impression that the Pictorico paper
was going for more of a high gloss look, and not really the "soft gloss"
more characteristic of the air-dried silver print...just curious.

Robert,

The Pictorico Premium Photo Glossy is a soft gloss paper most similar
to Epson Pro Glossy. The Pictorico Photo Gallery Glossy has a very
high gloss.

[Digital BW] Re: Soft gloss paper for 2200?

Carl is right...the only glossier is the PG High Gloss White
Film...which if you like high gloss is really outstanding (and
expensive).

I think the bronzing is far less on these PR papers but it's isn't
always totally invisible.
