sizing uncoated papers

sizing uncoated papers

2001-09-27 by Kees Brandenburg

Who has tried sizing uncoated papers (before printing)?

As a gumprinter I am sizing all my papers (mainly watercolour and
rives BFK) with (formalin) hardened gelatin.
I tried these papers with Epson OEM dyes in a 1200 with no result.
The dyes float off on top of the hardened gelatin.

Will this be different with pigment based inks (I ordered a CIS and
MIS quad black inks this week)?

After receiving the CIS and inks I will experiment with different
coatings - unhardened gelatin, hardened gelatin, starch, PVA etc.

Who knows what coating is used by archival inkjet paper manufacturers
(hahnemuhle, somerset etc.)?

thanks,

Kees Brandenburg

Hi,

Take a look at lotusviewcamera.com (I think). They not only sell
paper but the coating fluid to apply to fine art papers,

I've tried unhardened gelatin and starch, didn't work too well with
dyes. Since pigs seem less tolerant of surface I suspect it won't work
too well. Dan had success with egg white and milanta...
I'm not kidding.
Do a search in the epson/leben list for milanta and I'll bet you'll
find it.

This is liquid photo emulsion, similar to LiquidLight, for coating
paper for DARKROOM work; not for inkjet printing. I agree with
Diana; why try to reinvent the wheel?

You didn't look in the right place.

I could see this as being something I would like to try, but the cost
in money and time would be great. Their 500ml bottle is about $38 USD,
is that correct?

As far as coatings and archival-ness, what is usually the ingredient
that causes the most concern? and what is it in them that reacts to ink
in sometimes ill ways?
