Darla..
I would definitely go with the MIS inks, probably the
"VM" series with the workflow as set up by Paul Roark, who will send you his
"curves" for variable tone (cool to warm) B&W prints (at N/C.. it's a "labor
of love" for him!)
Depending upon your expected largest size print, I would buy an Epson 1280
(6-color) for up to about 12"x18", with a CIS (continuous ink supply
system)..If you do any volume of printing at all, you'll think you are
printing for "no-cost!"..
I realize the preceding is not in-depth, but should should help you get
started ..Search the archives of this group, and you can learn alot..Good
luck!

I'm not sure I would agree that a 'newby' should go out and get a
CIS, especially if they may want to experiment with different
inksets, and in view of the severe, and very frustrating problems
that people have reported in here about CIS.

I am the technology coordinator at a high school and I have access to a
1280 printer. I will start with your suggestions of ink and give it a try.
Thanks, I am sure I will be back for more info. By the way, when I said
"newby", I meant only to the B&W printing...I have been in the technology
field since the early 80's. This is just a new avenue for me to get into.
Thanks again.

Darcy..
OK on the 1280..You "CAN" use pre-filled carts( and maybe that's all you can
use an a machine you have "access" to), however, your long-run savings could
be 10-fold via the CIS route..I don't know if you have or have tried a CIS
in your experience with color, but the same holds true..I have two 1160
Epson 4-color machines....BOTH with CIS adaptors...One dedicated to
Mediastreet Generations Color, and one to MIS Sepia VM inks( Neutral to full
Sepia), and yes, in two years of heavy printing, I've had a few "clogs",
none of which I have not been able to work through in short order..The only
PROBLEM I have is productivity..too much of it..I'm running out of space
for storage, mounting , matting and framing!
