There were always dreamers so:

There was a Canon inkjet that had a fluid in one of the heads to
make the paper more inkjet compatible or something like that.
There was a HP inkjet with a heated wire just after the print
area to dry the ink fast.
There's the First foil that is heat treated with infrared after
printing to enclose the pigment ink in a resin.

Ernst,

that sounds interesting - who did that, do you know?  Encapsulating in a resin 
makes the most sense, especially if it can be done at the printing stage.

It is very much sign industry dedicated. Vinyl isn't a substrate
you would like to use for your prints. I've never understood why
they didn't use it on polyester sheets or paper. Ilford announced
a similar concept about two years ago but it is still in the labs
I guess. Asked them at the last Photokina but nothing will be
released soon.
