Turns out dotless prints on the 2100/2200 with Ultratones and Epson
driver IS possible after all.
I've just been really, really thick headed and misread the instructions
for using Paul's VM Curves on the MIS web-site. When I first put the
Ultratones in my printer I tried most of the curves withut much success,
but it turns out I used 'Printer color management' when 'Same as source'
was the correct setting, and this actually fixed all the problems I had
with dots in the highlights completely.
Sorry for misleading you all...
Of the curves I've tried the 1290 curves works the best, but they have
problems with bad transitions several places. I've gone ahead and fixed
the warm and warm neutral curves. I removed the bad transitions and
re-linearized the curves, and now they seem to work great. I don't have
a spectrometer, so I'm not sure if the tones are exactly the way they're
supposed to be, but to my eyes they look really good.
I'm struggling with the cool curve though, the tone is uneven in the
80-65% and 40-30% areas and I have a really hard time fixing that. I'm
trying some of the curves for other printers right now, but I suspect
this one is going to require some experimentation before I get it right.
At least now I'm getting the best prints I've yet seen from my printer -
Comparable to the best workflows I've seen in exhcanges... Now I just
have to improve my photography skills to match the print quality <g>
