QuadToneRIP versus OPM/IJC ?

QuadToneRIP versus OPM/IJC ?

2003-07-25 by johngeyles

I'm curious about what the trade-offs are between using
QuadToneRIP and OPM/IJC ? Looks like Windows users are out of
luck on either one, and for Mac users, QTR is OSX only and
IJC is OS9 only.

But, except for that ? (Specififically, for 2200 users).

Looks like both are very flexible, and will be able to use
any quad- or hex-tone inksets that become available for the
UltraChrome printers. Speaking of which, when will those
actually become available (for those of us who don't want to mess
with CIS or filling our own cartridges) ?

Thanks, John

One big advantage of QTR is that it's free and supports a huge number of printers.
The free version of OPM only supports a few printers, adn the commercial version is
rather pricey. My understanding is that both use the gimp drivers at their core.

Now why exactly would you want to use a 2200 with 3rd party inks when
you can get the same performance from a 1280 for a fraction of the
price????

You can get the same performance from the 1280 *IF* you load it
with 3rd-party inks. And, I already own a 2200. But, even if I
were re-thinking the printer-buying decision, I would probably
go with the 2200, because color is also important to me, and the
2200 is far better for color (at least if longevity is important
to you).

Hi. I am using OPM but I cannot find profile's for Epson's Velvet Fine Art and
Watercolor papers. Can anyone tell me where to look?

Thanks.

By the by, does QTR work with profiles like OPM (would I have to hunt for those too?)

QTR ships with information on how to make your own paper-specific curve files.

It isn't simple, but not too hard either.

Performance (particularly printing speed), reliability, and ease of
switching carts (no need for a dedicated inkset CIS) is much better
with the 2200. With one additional light gray ink the 2200 would most
likely surpass the 1280 for B&W print quality as well. I also don't
particularly care to maintain and feed two printers and currently I'm
quite pleased with the 2200 for both color and B&W.

Epson Velvet Fine art should work great with the EEM/EAM profiles
because it is the same coating. Check the files section of the list
for what people have made available. In the end the best option with
OPM is to make your own profiles using Ink Jet Control and a
densitometer...its easy and IJC and a used densitometer are pretty
cheap...then you can use any paper and inkjet you like.

Hi,

I am very happy too with my 2100 (European equivalent for the 2100).
For black and white it possibly is not the best choice.
(results are quite nice but I prefer the tones of Pizography prints I have seen).

Does anyone know when Piezography Quad inks will become available for the 2100/2200?

All the best,

I use Carl Schofield's EEM OPM/IJC profile. It works great for me. I wanted to get the
profile for the Velvet Fine Art and Watercolor Epson papers pecause they look real
nice.

I'll try using the EEM profile on the Velvet Fine Art Paper to see if the prints come out
looking just as good as on the EEM paper.

Thanks.

By the way, I live in the Dominican Rep. and it's kind of difficult to find used
densitometers for sale. If I could get a paypal account, I would try e-bay but I can't
(need to have a US credit card).

Epson Paper names..

2003-07-25 by Tim Atherton

I remember a while back, someone saying that the Professional Glossy Paper
which is only available in 13x19 is the exact same paper as one that only
comes in rolls (I think only 24" and 38") which has a different name...
anyone remember?

On a different note, I recently got my 2200 and have been playing with the
greyscale balancer. I haven't even tried matte papers yet, but I happened to
have a box of letter sized Ilford Smooth Gloss. This seems to have come out
very nicely indeed.

While it does seem to metamerise slightly (I don't have any florescent light
handy, so just going from daylight to tungsten) it remains neutral
throughout the changes. Indeed, I carried a silver print of the same image
along side it, and the changes were no more objectionable than I could see
on that print.

Also, it doesn't really "bronze" (and certainly much less than the various
Epson glossy and semi-gloss papers) it's more that it "silvers" - which
again is much less objectionable. This is by far the closest to a silver B&W
print (albeit RC) I have got from any Epson printer, including many
different formulations of MIS Quads...
