This is a good solution. I am a Pc person (working on both platforms).
 This "print server Mac"
may not be fast, may not be loaded. All the manipulations you will do
on your main station.
Just printing software like Bowhouse - set up on the Mac.
But how is it possible to without installing a Mac version of PS on it?
I am curious how you might make it work if you have all your expensive
software on Pc.
Can you guide me through?
I would appreciate advice. Used "white and blue" Mac G3 - I believe
suitable for the task you may
buy for around $300. It's a worth considering option.
Jack

Bowhaus OPM/IJC runs independently of PhotoShop, so you don't need
Photoshop on the cheap Mac. In other words, it's standalone.

I'm not sure about Quadtone RIP. And it only runs under OSX
(as I understand it), which I'm not so sure you can install on a G3
(and might cost even more).

Hopefuly someone who's actually gone down this Mac-printserver route
will chime in.

Good luck, John

Here's a URL to check the specs of all "current" Macintoshes back to
the G3 (according to Apple, all G3s can run OS X):

  http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html

Here's another good source for finding out about old Macs:

It may not be cheaper than the Epson RIP. ($200) The sample prints
from the Epson RIP were excellent.

QuadToneRIP has to run on OS X 10.2.x and you have to print from a OS X
native program. So if you want to print directly from PS it has to be PS7.
However you can save the file and print from a program called Preview or
actually just drag the file (a .tif, .jgp or .psd -- not sure about layers)
onto the PrintCenter. What you lose is fancy positioning because that's in PS.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
