Epson 1200 BANGING sound? HELP!

Epson 1200 BANGING sound? HELP!

2003-07-28 by quinnrichard

Hi-
I have an Epson 1200 with MIS Sepia installed and its been working fine
until just lately when it has begun "banging around' as I call it. No
matter what I try it VERY OFTEN (now) stops at the edge of whatever
size paper I have in the printer and retreats quickly as if it 'hit'
the edge of the paper--- then bangs back and forth before ejecting the
paper or printing the image shifted to one side. Anyone know what this
is? OR, what I can do to correct it? Doesn't matter whether I have the
plus/minus lever in either position. It is as if the head is sticking
out and hitting something but I don't see anything that could be
causing this? Very curious?

Thanks, Richard

Hi Richard...

Sounds like what you have is a need for lubrication. The metal rod
upon which the print head travels has dried out and the printer's own
self preservation routine is to stop the head short as if it has hit
something. You can remedy this by spraying a little WD40 or similar
lubricant onto a paper towel and wiping the rod down while the heads
are parked. That should get it moving again.

Good Luck,

Bob

Don't use wd-40 to lubricate the rod!

I agree. WD-40 is not intended as a lubricant.

A tiny amount of sewing machine oil does the trick. I wipe the rod with
a clean soft cloth (old handkerchief), then apply the oil to the rod
with a cotton bud.

I'll say it again: A tiny amount is enough.

Thanks for correcting me Keith. I did a little research and found
this post from a different group from last summer:

Don't use WD-40 if you can help it, try sewing machine oil or some kind of
non-corrosive oil that does not attract dust. Last thing to use is WD-40.
There are some great gun oils out there. Very, very thin layer.

Try TetraGun oil: it has a reasonable viscocity, is synthetic and with
a good teflon content.

I just noticed my E3000 making a vibration sound on each return
motion of the head. A bit of this oil, actually, a tad more than very
light, was needed to make it smooth. I plan to wipe it off and reapply
after a bit of use frees the crud out from inside the sleeve bearing
on to the shaft.

PS: Don't forget the front head rest guide flange ( at least on the
E3000 )

Best,
Alex

It's used for water displacement, as the name ("WD") indicates. It's also a
penetrating oil for loosening tight and possibly corroded nuts and bolts.
It can be used for a lubricant for non-critical applications, such as door
hinges. But due to its penetrating qualities, it probably shouldn't be used
in critical applications. For example, people who have used it to lubricate
guns have found that it penetrates into the primers of loaded cartridges
and renders them inert.

Stan,

Bummer! Maybe it would be a good nozzle cleaner? Only kidding!! I spritz
the crap into everything that squeaks. I have a silicone spray that should
do better for the printer rails - wiped on, of course.

As stated in other posts on this topic, DON'T LUBRICATE WITH WD-40.
it my freeup somethings, but it is not a lubricate to use. If you do,
you may have more problems down the road. Please read all the answers
to your original post.

Another alternative that I use on cameras is the lubricant that model
railroaders use. It is sold in small plastic tubes with a nice long
nozzle. It does not attract dust and does not penetrate.

I found it in the local hobby shop.
