Qimage better for printing than photoshop?

Qimage better for printing than photoshop?

2003-08-12 by Bernie Ess

Hi, since I have started archival b&w printing on an Epson 1160 with
MIS - FS mostly - I have always printed with the Epson driver out of
PS. However I keep reading hymns of praise about Qimage. I remember
having tried out an evaluation version of Qimage some time ago, but I
found the program hardly understandable to use and gave up quickly.

So my question is: Could one achieve better results when printing -
avter having applied the curves for the inks in PS - out of Qimage?

Has anyone had good results with this?

Thanks,

Bernie

Definitely.

My system consists of PC with W2k, PS7, Epson 1270 with Ultratone
CIS.

I only use a fraction of Qimage can do and I do most of the image
manipulation in PS7 but use QI to optimise the print quality and
autosharpen.

I have uploaded a couple of scan of PS7 printing and QImage printing
for you to see real world scans. In addition to being an excellent
piece of software Mike Chaney updates this like nothing on earth and
all for the one registration. You can see the images at
http://www.littleblueplanet.co.uk/not-QIsharpened.jpg and
http://www.littleblueplanet.co.uk/QI-sharpened.jpg

and readmore about Qimage at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/qimage/messages

Not very user friendly admittedly but bl**dy good at what it does.

Why not sharpen in PS?

What I would like to see is an image printed through PS and an image
through Qimage. No additional processing on either or the same
processing on both and do a comparison.

[Digital BW] Re: Qimage better for printing than photoshop?

This is exactly what the 2 links I provided do.

The non-QI image is a straight print through PS7 to my 1270 using the
same parameters as the QI print ie no Epson 1270 drievr included.

The non-QI print is printed at 300dpi whereas QI has interpolated the
image to 496 dpi (for whatever reason) and added some auto-
sharpening. I have never had any problem with the amount of
sharpening which QI has added to any of my prints.

That's what I mean - I would like to see it without autosharpening.

This isn't possible!

You must mean without adjustment using the epson driver.

Sorry meant generic Epson 1270 profile not driver, ie print space
is 'Same as Source' not Epson 1270.

Pardon my jumping in but I think the auto sharpening in QImage can be turned
off . Prints Menu, Print Interpolation - there is a slider for sharpening
that has an off position.

That would be the driver doing the conversion - not photoshop.
If you select a destination space in photoshop (ie Epson Premium Glossy
Photo Paper) and then select no colour adjustment in the driver then PS
will be doing the corrections instead.
