You mean the appearence of banding or a general difference in
image quality ? You mention the low contrast in relation so I
guess it is the first. Banding will be different per scanner as
it is a result of the 3 uncalibrated sensors. I probably had some
luck with mine as others have more often reported similar
problems.

It is the first step that brings most of the quality gain. What
you also could check is the focus at the left and the right side
of the carrier. By adding some tape over the full length
underneath one of the bars at right or left the focusing can be
be improved over the entire image. I had to do that for three
8000 scanners and all were lower at the left side. It is
interesting though that the focus in the middle will always be
lower than the sides, probably related to the lens curvature.
That was all measured for the wetmount carriers that I made.
