Printer recommendation for OS X user

Printer recommendation for OS X user

2003-09-24 by lambertdickmeis

[newbie alert]

Hi everybody,

I'm looking for recommendations for a printer to use with OS X 10.2. I've heard good
things about Lyson ink, so if the printer can use that, that would be a plus. Print sizes
larger than letter/A4 would be nice, but not absolutely necessary.

I'm currently considering either a Canon S9000 or an Epson 1160, which are
both available in the $350 price range here in Germany. Epson's Piezo printing seems to
enjoy a large following in this group; on the other hand, I've read many negative reports
on versiontracker.com regarding Epson's driver support, and printer operating noise is
also an issue, which is why I'd favour the Canon if print quality were the same.

Another issue would be clogging of printer heads -- I don't expect to put out lots of prints
on a regular basis. More like a bunch, occasionally, since I'm a hobbyist.

And I'm definitely open to other suggestions. I understand that the purchasing price of the
printer is dwarfed by expense on materials.

Epson seems to have been slow to upgrade their drivers to new OSes,
but I am too, and the 1160's drivers for 8.6 and 9.1 seem ok to me. I
have not tried OS X yet.

My 1160s (I have two) don't seem noisy to me. I have not heard the
Canon S9000; maybe it's even less noisy. It's just that mine have
never bothered me.

That's how I've printed too, but without ever being troubled by
clogs. I do, however, do nozzle checks every day whether I'm going to
print or not. Whether that's prevented clogs is dubious, however,
because I also don't get clogs, or typically even have to use the
"clean" function, when I get back from a trip of as long as three
weeks. I have Media Street inks (Gen 4) in one on of my 1160s and MIS
inks (Sepia - Neutral) in the other. I haven't had a Lyson ink set in
either of them, so I can't say about that.

You might want to send your query also to the MacEpsonList:

Welcome to the list(s). I'm going away for a couple of weeks but will
look forward to hearing what you've decided to do when I get back.
Good luck.
