PhotoKit
2003-11-04 by Ken Carney
I bought PhotoKit and PhotoKit Sharpener (www.pixelgenius.com) and have had
pretty good luck with it. Here is my b&w workflow. I would appreciate any
comments for improvement. This is for printing with Epson OEM inks.
Workflow:
1. Scanned 16-bit RGB image
2. Make all tonal adjustments possible in 16-bit, curves, levels and history
brush
3. Convert to 8-bit
4. Photokit capture sharpener
5. Flatten image
6. Photokit color to b&w conversion w/appropriate filter
7. Photokit layer adjustments except sharpening and toning
8. Photokit creative sharpening brushes
9. Flatten and save
10. Image>duplicate (tile display) for comparison
11. View>proof colors>paper profile for image to print
12. Layer>new>layer set for image to print
13. Curve etc. layer as necessary to approximate copy
14. Turn off soft proof, discard copy
15. Apply desired Photokit b&w toning layer
16. Save with soft proofing layer set and toning layer as PS .psd as
image_notfinalsharpened.psd, replace step 9
17. Photokit output sharpener
18. Flatten
19. Print/preview with proof space as source, output same as source, no
color correction
20. Exit image without saving if you get a good print
This lets you go back and have second thoughts about the toning layer or the
layer set for soft proofing. If you're fortunate enought to have a good
print, successive prints require only applying the output sharpener and
flattening. I don't print very large (about 10x15" image size for 35mm
max), so there may be some improvements that would show up with larger
prints. Thanks for any suggestions.
