War Preparations (Stay in Touch)

War Preparations (Stay in Touch)

2001-10-07 by Mark Tucker

This is not an alarmist post, but it appears that we're very near
the first bombing.

Just a reminder to stay alert, and stay in touch, and up your
awareness level a couple of notches.

All of us are spread out all over the planet, and it makes it so
much more surreal to think that we're pretty much equally at risk;
Nina in Paris, Julian in Spain, and all of us goobers here in the
U.S. Where is everybody else that's posted recently? Steadman,
are you in the UK? And Carolyn? And Johnny?

(Jon is probably the only one that's safe... Who would ever bomb
Vermont? I feel especially at risk, because high on my personal
list would be all these cheesy country music stars...)

Thanks Mark, how do you do it... bringing levity to a bizarre and sad
situation is admirable...

I'm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada... Oil and urban caboys... I'll go turn on
the TV now.

Keep safe everyone.

Mark,
I am in the Los Angeles area (USA, California) and I feel very vulnerable. We
are 30 miles from down town L.A. but I worry about things like our dams and
water supplies etc. I wish I still lived in Wisconsin. Nothing but cows and
cheese!

Good luck to us all from the UK.

Re:War Preparations (Stay in Touch)

Mark,

Yeah, Paris authorities have covered the trash recepticles in the Metro
(subway) again. Makes for sloppy street mess but hey, better than bombs.
Sure sign that they're on their toes. Also a lot of Police presence in
the Metro recently. As you probably know we went through a spate of
horrific subway bombings by Algerian fundamentalists several years ago.
On the other hand I just say when one's time is up it is up and go on
about my business. I don't look forward to the delays at the airport when
I leave for NZ on Oct 18th but I'd rather deal with the delays than risk
falling out of the sky, know what I mean? It has always bothered me the
way US airports/checkins are so undefended. Commercial priorities? They
should borrow a page from Europe and have the national authorities in
charge of airport security.

Cheers,

Nina

I believe the US are implementing air marshalls again aren't they? Here in
Canada they are doing this again... I don't know why they ever stopped..
(complacency?) I understand that this will fall to the RCMP here in Canada
(national authorities) and I believe this to be a very good thing.
Best,
Carolyn

I feel pretty safe here in Brazil - but who knows what\ufffds in people\ufffds mind? I
hope this insanity finishes as soon as possible, and keep the innocents
(well, they say there are none, but...) alive.

This is nice... it is unfortunate however that *some* people are
passionately trying to achieve harm and hatred to others.

I must be really odd. I live less than 10 miles from Three Mile Island (you
all remember that place) and within a stones throw from two of the largest
military supply depots in the world. Three very prime targets.

I am not worried. I have made my Pease with my maker and if it is my time to
go I am ready.

There is absolutely noting I can do if some SOB wants to clear me from the
face of the earth. I could worry my life away, but if he wants to get me he
will get me.

I am not going to allow some "bastard" to ruin my life with worry. I am
going to go about my day living it to the fullest, helping as many of my
fellow human beings as I can. When my day comes, it comes. I just pray I did
not pass up just one opportunity to help someone who needed my help.

Re: [Digital BW] War Preparations (Stay in Touch)

2001-10-07 by Steadman Uhlich

I live a few miles from one of the nation's Air Force bases, Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery Alabama. Not worried about attacks on the air bases as they are well defended and on the look out. I hope everyone remembers that the armed forces are used to deliver on political policy. Those airmen and soldiers and sailors (from whatever country) involved in this need our support in order to get the job done so that we can ALL live a more secure artful life..no matter what country we live in.

But...I would not attend a football game in a big stadium. They hold thousands of people in a small congested and exposed area and the "target" is usually on live television. The local Auburn stadium holds 86,000 people and is always packed full. Imagine the opportunity for a terrorist. Shades of Black October (was that the name of that movie some years ago?...you know the one where the Goodear blimp attacks Miami stadium.)

One of my best friends is a professor at the Air War college here. For several years we have discussed the dangers of anthrax attacks, bio weapons, and other things best left to the imagination of Hollywood screen writers. After many debates on this, I am convinced the threat is not to the US military, but instead to the civilian population. The US and every other country should be vigilant as long as this campaign to stomp out terrorism lasts.

Regarding air marshals on planes: I wish the US federal government would take over the security of the air transport system. I like the idea of having a Canadian Mounty on board.

Final note: I watched Tony Blair on the telly last night. He is a statesman and a great spokesman and leader in a time like this. We need more people like that leading governments.

Regards all,
Steadman
