Anyone try the new piezo paper?

Anyone try the new piezo paper?

2003-11-20 by Jim Batzer

Has anyone used the new Piezography Museum Bright White paper with
UT inks? Any existing curves that work well with this paper? I'm
using a 1280 with UT inks. The paper sounds good and is cheap - 13 x
19 (25) for $46... Cheaper than Epson scrapbook paper.

I was also wondering if the 1280 can handle 300 gms paper. I know it
will handle .27mm thick paper (Epson site specs), but I don't know
how to convert the numbers (gms to mm to mil to lbs???). Also, at
what gms (or mil, mm, lbs.) should one start using the thicker
(envelope) lever setting?

Thanks,

Jim Batzer

Jim,

Can't help you the new paper but....

I have run many, many sheets of Photo Rag 308 gsm and German Etching 310 gsm
through my 1280's without a problem. I have never adjusted the paper
thickness lever from the minimum setting. The thicker papers will probably
need a gentle push to get started and/or a foam core support piece in the
paper feed tray.

You cannot convert gsm (grams per square meter) to thickness. The density of
the paper does not directly relate to how thick it is. The stiffness of the
papers varies a lot too and that effects paper handling. As far as I know
the 1280 should handle any paper in the 300 to 350 gsm range. I have not
tried anything beyond that.

If you do try the new paper please let us know what you think.

Yes, I've tried the new Museum White Piezo paper. I don't use piezo
inks however. I use ImagePrint software on an Epson 2200. I used the
profile for epson velvet fine art and got a beautiful B&W print. Have
not printed color yet.Assuming
this paper is as archival as velvet fine art paper( that might be a
big assumption), it is the best paper I've come across. It is thick
and very white( as white as epson enhanced matte). Blacks are as deep
as on any epson paper by visual inspection. My only problem is that I
have no specific paper profile for the ultrachrome inks using
imageprint sofware.

I've profiled this paper for the 2200 with UC inks using QTR. Dmax was
only 1.58.

If you have a maintenance agreement (or know someone who does), ColorByte will generate profiles upon request. This benefits all IP users because they will be posted on their FTP site for all to use.

Here's what John Custodio reported on the Piezo list about this paper
and the PremierArt Hot Press:

Message #23390
"Yes, I tested Piezography Museum Bright White with
Studio Print and got a Dmax of 1.65 with PiezoTone
Selenium and Portfolio Black. Not as good as
Hahnemuehle Photo Rag (1.74) but better than the
Ultrasmooths."
-John

Message #23345:
"I tested Premier Art and Epson Ultrasmooth with
PiezoTone Selenium and Portfolio Black using Studio
Print and got a meager 1.55 Dmax on both papers."
-John

Andre

Hi there,
Have anyone of you tried the "Condor Bright White" 290gsm dual sided from Hawk Mountain Art papers? go to www.hawkmtnartpapers.com and request samples. I think you will like it.
