still trying to install QuadTone RIP

still trying to install QuadTone RIP

2003-11-20 by johngeyles

I am still unsuccessfully striving to get QTR working.
I'm on a G4 running 10.2, with a USB-connected Epson 2200.
Also, I am running PS6 under Classic.

When I select "Print" under PS6, I still just see the same old
Epson driver.

Is there an easy to way to check, maybe in a Unix terminal shell,
that all the things are installed: gimp-print, ghostscript, qtr,
etc. I believe I have properly done the "Add" procedure and then
installed some of the curves as explained the last time I begged
for help. I am at wit's end.

Thanks, John

Programs running under Classic can't print to the OS X printing system,
so you can't get to QTR from PS6. However, you can print using the
Preview program of OS X. Preview accepts not only pdf files but also
tiff, jpg and psd files. So just save it and read into Preview. I haven't
done much work this way, but the only thing I know you'll be
lacking is the nice layout dialog in PS. I believe it always centers
the print.

PS6 is using the printer driver in OS9/Classic. It's not going to use
what you installed in OSX.

Duh ! I thought maybe it had something to do with this. (I maybe
mentioned I was using PS6 in my previous plea, but I can't expect
good samaritans to read every single word carefully :-)

Well, having to save it out first is what OPM/IJC requires anyhow.

But I plan to upgrade to an OSX-native version of Photoshop soon
anyhow. Do people think Photoshop CS is worth it ? Probably,
since PS7 is not much cheaper. But I thought I'd read some fairly
disparaging stuff about the user interface of CS.

I hadn't heard that. I hope not. I just bought it, mainly for the 16-bit
workflow feature.

Photoshop CS is well worth the $170. User interface is the same as 7 - not sure what
you heard?

I've heard the file browser is improved, but I don't use it anyway. What I
like about the "user interface" is the fewer grayed-out functions on a 16bpc
image.

The only downside I've encountered is that the camera raw plugin uses a new
Adobe standard for embedding the EXIF data, called XMP, which makes it
invisible to the rest of the world (e.g., ThumbsPlus, PBase) until everyone
else rewrites their software to conform.

I think that one needs to print from an OSX application to access the
OSX printers like QTR.

By the way, I've just started using QTR a couple days ago.

While I found the enclosed instructions somewhat hard to decipher, I
now think I've got it down.
And the prints are the best inkjet B&W I've ever made. Much better
smoothness and tonal scale than the old piezo plug-in on my 1160 using
MIS FS inks.

And even without a densitometer, I can make curves myself for any
paper. (I practiced on plain paper). And they are better on my printer
than the Piezo plug-in ever was.
If I had a densitometer, they'd be spot on every time I think.

Thanks Roy for all your work on this software. It's a great solution.

Perhaps we could post to the archives a more user friendly, step by
step, instruction manual for QTR.
I might give it a go when I get more familiar with the process.

The upgrade was definitely worth it for me. It installed without
error and has worked flawlessly so far (XP Pro, 2.4g P4 with 512 Ram).
The interface is essentially the same as 7, with a much improved file
browser.

The first image I worked on required 6 separate data layers each with
a dedicated curve adjustment layer. I was able to do the entire
operation in 16 bit, including quick masks and gradient tool. The
resulting histo was full and solid, no combs. It would have been
mince meat in PS7. It handled all operations without so much as a
hiccup.
PS8 is a huge improvement over 7.

Regards,
Clayton
