Need price quote help fast

2001-10-09 by sdmey4@aol.com

I client has asked for a volume price quote for 300 8x10's of two images. For
a hotel project in Japan. I can only guess that they want cheap.
Rc prints
Silver Fiber from digital negative
Piezo
Any ideas on how to price the 3 mediums above? I could do any one of them. I
need to give them a quote by the AM. I have done deals like this with RC
prints only at 12.00 each. I can do 300 RC 8x10 in about 4 hours. I rather do
better and get more.
Anybody done any volume sales with Hotel type projects? Normally I don't
offer 8x10's at all anymore.

Steve

If these are prints of your images I'd like to see you make more money than
that! $12 isn't much more than the price someone would pay for a custom 8x10
at a decent lab if it's one of their own negatives. You'd be practically
giving your IMAGE (your art/vision) away for the price of materials alone.
If it were up to me they'd be paying you $12/print for materials and
expenses, plus at least a couple grand for usage rights. They can't buy
pillow cases for the price of those prints, and you can imagine how many of
those they buy, and how fast they replace them. They owe you some towels and
an ashtray big time. ;-)

Steve,
Don't sell your lovely images at cost...ask for a lot and come down some if
you have to. But I think $7500 would be rock bottom. And make sure they are
paying for shipping, insurance, packaging and matting and framing. Now if
they will you pay you to deliver them and give you lodging...negotiate.

Steve,

A good custom lab would charge you $30 to $100 per 8x10. I hate to
see you get less than the reproduction costs.

There is also LightJet or Fujix which I believe you could get at less
than $10 in those volumes.

If $12 is all you can get, give them RC.

Good luck and let us know how you do,

Martin

Flora: call for enties

2001-10-10 by Todd Flashner

Thinking about Steve M's possible large print sale deal --particularly
thinking how beautiful his work is-- made me think I should let you all know
about a call for entries by Graphis Publications for their first edition of
a book called Flora 1. The deadline is October 15th. I know several people
on this list have wonderful bodies of work which focus on plant life.
However, I called their office and they are open to landscapes too if their
focus is on flora/fauna-- so it's not just for photos of flowers.

Graphis is a very highly regarded publisher that many creatives look through
it for inspiration, so not only is it an honor to have your work selected
for publication but it's also great PR which can often lead to sales and
assignments. I'd say their focus is primarily on the commercial arts but
with a greater emphasis on the word "art" than just about all others of it's
kind.

The usual disclaimers apply, I'm just a fan of their books and magazine and
hope to submit a few inkjets of my own. If anyone enters, good luck.

Don't wory Trish, My days of working for cost are behind me. I like your
number as the bottom, anything less I would probably regret it. I've been
interested in Hotel deals but I always thought 16x20's would be the ticket,
this 8x10 thing kind of was a curve ball! You have one of the images, I can
tell you those tiny fine lines you see on your 8x10 really open up at 16x20
and you really start to see. At the small 8x10 size I have several images
where the fine details just are too tight and are somewhat lost!
Appreciate the input..

Steve,

A few threads ago, there was discussion about how some photographers felt honored to have a print hung in a bathroom, as it is one of the most visited rooms in the house.

Having 300 prints in 300 bathrooms would be an achievement. It would sure get a lot of traffic and visibility.

Good luck (seriously) and if I found one of your prints in a hotel bathroom, I would be lucky...as most of them are probably going to disappear with the towels. (grin)

Best of luck,

Steadman
