BO printing and grain or is it dots?

BO printing and grain or is it dots?

2003-12-13 by neilsphoto

IMO 35mm TX or TMZ 3200 should be grainy. Or dotty? I don't know but I've
got nice BO prints from TX and TMZ that look like TX or TMZ.

I can shoot any format from 35mm-8x10. Because of time and recently
moving I've only been shooting 35mm. And I can only scan 35mm at home.
While I know that a BO inkjet print isn't really going to look like the the "real"
silver prints around the house that is OK. Also like Hartmann I really like the
grain and look of 35mm, TX especially.

I used to try to bend 35mm to look like larger formats when all I had was
35mm. Once I finally borrowed a friends dads Rollicord I gave up on that and
waited till I could move up. TX is my favorite flavor in all formats.

When I was printing Pd and Pt prints my first prints were biased by me to my
silver taste. When I got over that things were different. I went with the very
long scale and lower contrast. I just didn't at first. Different process and a
different look. BO prints or any inkjet print are different, but that is the Holy
Grail thread anyway.

Imagine a TMZ 3200 available light shot printed with a dotless system. How
would it look? I've never seen one so I really don't know. But I would want to
see the grain, and I'd want sharp grain. That is part of the shot, the mood you
get with TMZ. I wouldn't want it smoothed out in anyway.

I have BO prints from Agfa APX100 in Rodinal 1:50 or 1:25. Blazing sharp
negs with killer edge sharpness. APX in Rodinal will do that. The BO prints
look very very much like they would on silver and for me that is the point.

I have too many nice film cameras that let me shoot all the different characters
of film, film speeds and film developers. I want all those choices to appear in
my prints. That is one very big reason I don't own any digital camera.

It's like a tube guitar amp vs solid state. Electric drums so popular years ago
vs "real" drums (maybe calfskin heads vs plastic). My wifes pie crust vs Can'O
crust. You get the idea.

BO is very good, I think very natural and very easy and cheap. For now I'm
spending on ink and paper, not RIPs and the like.

The real test? I shot a Barmitzvah for a freind a month ago. All TX, all
scanned and the prints will be not silver but BO with Ebony on PR. We'll see
what the reaction is.

So would I. Let's do a small BO print exchange. I'm getting some
gorgeously sharp, vibrant 2200/Eboni BO prints with my Fuji GW690III
and Contax G2 negs.

So, who's up for it? I'll coordinate if no one else wants to.

Richard:

I'm in. It would work well is if were such a small group that we could
just mail off a print to each other and need no coordinator. But if
there's a large enough interest to have a coordinator and some central
distribution point, so much the merrier.

Richard,

Include me in (if you happen to be the coordinator),
I'm interested to see what others are doing with the
2200

Ok, some have mentioned after the holiday rush as being better. I
agree. We'll make the deadline Jan. 31, 2004.

Unless I get a huge rush of requests (4 so far) I agree also that it
can be an exchange for a small group of us perhaps to send individual
packages to all.

If there is a desire for a central coordinator and all want to send
all to me for distribution that's fine too.

For the first one I'll limit it to 8 people . So far I have:

Me (Richard Sintchak)
Clayton Jones
Bob Michaels
Neil Swanson

Neil said perhaps he wants to do a few images from different negs. I
will probably do the same. Thus the smaller number of participants.

Next 4 people who want in on a BO print exchange email me directly and
you are in (with maybe 2 alternates).

I would like to take part in the Black Only printing exhcange. Can
you fill me in on the requirements for participation? My interest has
been renewed in BO printing since my inks are running low on the
other gray densities.

Ok Johnny, you are in too. 2 spaces left. Details forthcoming but in
essence it will be A4/letter size prints, at least one, sent to all in
the exchange. You will then get 7 packages from other with their
prints. Only requirement is BO printed.

I'd like to be in on this as well. I've done a lot of BO printing in
the past, and I'm currently working with the MIS VM inks, but a recent
BO print has renewed my interest and I'd really love to see what others
are getting as well, especially with the 2200 as compared to my 1280.

Thanks,

I would like to join as well! However in my efforts of BO with a
2200 I get some very uneven steps in the 21 step wedge. Anyone have
any idea why? (I'm printing from PS CS and windows XP) QTR on my Mac
is just fine, but I would like to get to Mr Claytons standard if
poss.

Thanks

Richard,

If it is not too late, please include me in the exchange. I've been
printing with Clayton's BO approach for several months on my 2200
using the standard Matte Black. I am interested in sharing my work
and seeing other BO prints.

Thanks,

If you guys go with a second round of this, I'd certainly be willing to
participate. Unfortunately, at the moment, I'm waiting for a new
monitor to arrive. The red gun has gone on the old one, so I can't put
together a piece to contribute until the new monitor arrives and I dig
my way out of the work backlog.
