1280 Pizza Wheel marks on Semigloss

1280 Pizza Wheel marks on Semigloss

2004-01-02 by Paul Roark

Well, I've scaled up to 13x19 with the Semigloss and spraying, and they look
great except for this one defect. On my most difficult nearly-pure-black,
clear skies the pizza wheel marks are showing. Are other papers better than
Epson? Can all the pizza wheels be removed from the 1280 and still have the
printer work? (I sure hope the 4000 does better.)

Paul,
Can you describe what these marks look like and where they are
located on the print?

Ed,

The pizza wheel marks are tiny dots or "holes" in the image that come in
pairs of lines about 1/8 inch apart. They go vertically across the entire
print, but they only show up in a bothersome manner in high-density, smooth
areas.

I removed some of them from my 3000 long ago, but I was a bit surprised that
the 1280 exhibits the same defect to the extent it showed up in this one
print of mine.

Inkjetart has instructions for removal of the wheels, which is probably
going to be a must-do for my RC printing. It appears from what Inkjetart
says that only the large format printers, which use a vacuum system instead
of pizza wheels, avoid this problem. I'll probably give the removal remedy
a try.

I followed the Inkjetart instructions for removing the pizza wheels, and the
printer seems to work fine. The wheel marks are gone.

Can't help there Paul, but if you're interested in the 4000, I can at
least tell you that the 2200 Epson driver has an option buried
somewhere that allows insertion of a variable number of pause seconds
after each pass...I think as much as 15 seconds. I think they did this
for people printing on film. It would certainly slow down print speed!
Don't know if 4000 will have this capability.

Using Imageprint 5.6, it doesn't help me much, as Epsdon driver is
bypassed for most part.

I found the pizza wheels on the 1280 to be a problem as well.
Directions for removing most of them are at the following link. The
printer works fine without them.

Dirk

Hi Paul,

I'm waiting for shipment of my UT-2 bulk inks when MIS re-opens
Monday. In the interim, I've been doing some experimentation with the
existing UT/1280 inks using Photo Black and a few Epson semigloss and
other "gloss" papers.

I hit the Pizza Wheel problem right away, and found I had to remove
them also. Since you are doing more work with the "gloss" papers, I
was wondering if you might have any suggestions or curves for Epson
Gloss (semi or lustre) papers and the UT/UT-2 inkset that you're
ready to share. Didn't find anything on the MIS site, and only a
mention of using Ilford Smooth Pearl.

I looked at Dirk's pages, and his instructions are fairly straight-
forward but I was looking for some starting profiles with the PK inks
on any of the Epson gloss papers.

As always, thanks for your generous advice, Paul.

Richard

Richard,

>I hit the Pizza Wheel problem right away, and found I had to remove

I notice that while the InkJetArt removal recommendation works very well,
MIS recommends leaving them in, but putting a washer under the 2 screws that
hold the metal plate with the pizza wheels. This is said to reduce the
pressure enough to avoid the marks. It also, of course, would have the
advantage of keeping the wheels there, and those wheels are there for a
reason. Among other things, they keep the paper down so that it does not
hit the paper. Getting the washer under the screw on the right is
apparently a bit of a trick. I haven't tried this, but I can see where it
might be at least theoretically a superior approach.

For the UT inkset, try Dirk's approach and curves.

I have curves for the UT2 inkset that work for all the Epson Premium papers
except the Semimatte, which appears to be quite different than the others.
I'll send them off list.
