BO Semi-gloss workflow and profiles

BO Semi-gloss workflow and profiles

2004-01-09 by Carl Schofield

I've put the workflow I'm currently using for BO prints on Epson
Premium Semi-gloss, using the Epson 2200 printer and MIS Eboni K, and a
couple of the BO softproof profiles in an archive (in the BO Printing
folder) on my file sharing site:

http://homepage.mac.com/scho/FileSharing2.html

The workflow is primarily based on Clayton Jones's procedures for
printing BO, Paul Roark's reports and procedures for coating semi-gloss
with PremierArt Print Shield, and Keith Krebs's suggestions for
printing BO on Oriental FB paper. The softproof profiles (for Epson
Premium Semi-gloss and Epson Enhanced Matte) were created by scanning
grayscale step wedges with an eye-one spectrophotometer, converting the
density data to dot percent values using Martin Wesley's spreadsheet
(in list files), and then creating the profiles with these data using
the procedure described by Tyler Boley (also in list files).

I've been reading this thread with interest. I just bought a 7600, and have
been divided about using it with Epson Semimatte or the new Epson UltraSmooth
paper. (I have a roll of each on hand here.) It's a big deal, because the
7600 doesn't allow easy K ink cartridge swaps, and I've wanted to resolve the
paper choice before loading an ink and firing up the 7600.

But this thread leaves me to think I can have my cake and eat it too, by
using the Eboni K on both papers. Carl (and Paul Roark and CJ), do you suppose
that the Semigloss paper profile you've just posted, and the workflows that you
and CJ have been developing for BO printing on Semigloss, would work equally
well with Semimatte? My recollection from Paul's earlier posts was that both
papers took the inks in similar fashion, but that Semimatte had a smoother
surface.

Thoughts?
