UT2 & 1290

UT2 & 1290

2004-01-11 by Paul Roark

I downloaded the 1290 driver from Epson UK and have been testing the UT2
inkset with the 1290 driver running my 1280. So far, it looks like the
system and curves work as is. The Ilford Smooth and Epson Premium Semigloss
results look the same with either driver.

This weekend I tried the UT2 curves to print the VM inks on my 1290.

I had problems with posterisation in shadow areas with the original
VM curves and as a result have been using Tyler Boley's curves.

I'm very happy with the way the new curves print though.

UT2 & 1290

2004-02-19 by Paul Roark

Unfortunately, I've concluded the existing 1280 curves are not working right
with the 1290. As with the old VM inkset and curves, there do appear to be
differences between the 1280 and 1290. (I suspect I'll find the same thing
with respect to the 2200 v. 2100.) Using the 1290 driver in my 1280 and the
initial feedback regarding the 1280 curves caused me to be overly
optimistic.

I have informed MIS and will be correcting my UT2 Readme file ASAP.

Sorry for the mis-information.

For those who have already purchased UT2 for the 1290, the inkset will print
fine with no curves. Some of the curves appear to work OK. I hope to have
a 1290 here in a few weeks and will modify the curves and send them to you.
Please contact me off list to obtain the corrected curves.

Do you think that the same could be true for 880 and 890? I am using
890 with UT1 inks and was just about to order MIS CFS and bottles of
UT2.

Thank you for you opinion.

Hi Paul, as you know, I am a 1290 user and sent you a load of ramp
prints.
I have to say that I am very happy with the performance of the UT2
inkset. I have recently changed to PS CS and when using 16bit prior
to applying curves I am getting super prints.
They may NOT be as good as the 1280 correct prints - I don't know,
but they are a huge, huge improvement on what I was getting with the
UT1 set and the original VM set using 1280/1290 curves.
You may find that the 1290 user base is actually more than satisfied
with the results.
I would dearly like a copy of any new curves if you feel results
could be improved further, but I for one am pretty pleased with my
new set-up.
I have taken my UT1 set out of my second printer already.

Thanks for your ongoing support.
Steve

I've been told the 890 is just a smaller version of the 1280. (I'm not sure
I know about the 880.) With the MIS VM inkset the feedback was that the
1280 curves worked well with it. But, I must confess that I've never seen
sets of curves done with that printer.

I think the 890 was sold in both the U.S. and Europe using that number. As
such, I assume they were the same so that at least there won't be a U.S. v.
Europe difference.

I expect we'll run into the same problems with the 2200 v. 2100.
