Ink/Printer Suggestions

Ink/Printer Suggestions

2004-01-12 by Cort Anderson

I am looking for some feedback on the pros & cons of different printers
and ink systems. This is going to be used for B&W printing only and
mostly on matte paper that is going to be mounted and framed. Stability
and life span of the prints are important. I don't mind using curves
and making adjustments in Photoshop to get a top quality print. I am on
a Mac and also don't mind working with a separate RIP if needed.

I have read all the specs and have used the the earlier Cone system,
what I am looking for are the things you don't learn until you actually
start making real prints.

Cone ICC or MIS UT using Paul's curves
I have used the Cone export module and old inks, I was very happy with
the prints, the workflow was okay and the clogs were hell. A friend
printed a sample with the MIS quadtone inks and the Cone inks and at
the time I liked the Cone better but not by much. Other than the
obvious, variable tones, workflow and price what else sets the two
apart.

1280 or 2200
What it comes down to is do the prints look enough better or are there
functions on the printer that make it worth the extra cost.

thanks,

cort

If cost is not an issue, I would go with the 2200 and ImagePrint. I
think it wins hands down and does so "out of the box" with, from what
I have seen, no clogs. Printer, ink and IP are all expensive though.

Unfortunately it is, I am going to really be stretching to do the 2200.
If I go with the 2200 it would be with the QTR. That is why I am trying
to get some info from people using them.

If I am going to be sleeping on my office floor for spending the money
I want to make sure it is worth it.
