Any thoughts on Leica Digilux 2 shooting 16 Bit Grayscale?

Curious about Leica Digilux 2 special features shooting in B/W mode with 16 Bit Grayscale. Is this the start of future modes in digital cameras? Or is it only conversion from RGB file? Soren
