Eboni vs. Epson OEM for Black Only

Eboni vs. Epson OEM for Black Only

2004-01-20 by wifflebomb

Recently I got a cartridge of MIS Eboni to try in my Black Only
printing on an Epson 2200. I have been using the standard 2200
driver on my Mac G4 and Epson Enhanced Matte paper.

I am pleased with the more neutral tone of the Eboni prints, but I
have noticed that the depth and richness of the print have been
diminished. The blacks are not as deep and the highlights look less
radiant than the prints made with Epson matte black ink. In general
the Eboni tonal scale looks much narrower.

Is this unavoidable, or is there a way to get more tonal scale out of
Eboni ink? Is there a curve or a driver or something that was
developed for BO on the 2200 using this ink? If this is as good as
Eboni can do, I think I will live with the brownish Epson ink. Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have the answer to your question. You are a step ahead
of me. I've been using the Epson blacks and have been quite
disappointed with their distinct lack of blackness (more like warm
brown). Even in the BO mode. So I was just about to send off for an
MIS Eboni cart when I came across your post. Sounds like you find the
Eboni blacker, but still lacking punch in some way. Printed anything
more with it since? I'd like to know your conclusion after you've
printed several different things with it, ie., whether it's worth
trying the Eboni or one is better off sticking to the Epson blacks.
Thanks.

You will get different hues with Epson MK, Epson Photo K, and Eboni K
on different papers. If you want a cold to neutral black use a bright
white paper like Premier Premium Matte or Piezography Bright White with
Eboni. Conversely, if you want a warm brown tone try a warmer paper
with either Epson MK or even Photo K (RC papers) ink. Also, I posted
a link to some scans that show these differences in hue awhile ago, but
here are a couple of examples (Epson semi-gloss) again:
