Getting neutral with color ink on a 1160 !!!

Getting neutral with color ink on a 1160 !!!

2004-02-15 by André Vallejo

So we come and go,come and go...
Bought a new 1160 to dedicate to BW. Still playing around with it's color inks, until new FS inks come out,so I decided to test a Selenium tone quadtone curve (the ones you apply in duotones) I got somewhere a while ago...So you go from color to grayscale, then to duotone, apply the quad and go back to color. I printed the image in EAM and...bingo! Neutral,no metamerism under sunlight or fluorescent. So I printed the same image with MIS-FS in a 980 on the same EAM,and put them side by side. You just can´t tell them apart. Shadows,midtones...maybe FS was a little smoother in the highlights, but very little, you really need to be looking from an inch away to see it.
For the sake of fairness, when I tried it on Ilford Smooth Pearl,my favorite,it has a lot o metamerism, toward a horrible green.
But on EAM,that´s it.Beautiful. No idea how it will work with other printer/inks/paper combos, but if someone would like to give it a try, email me and I'll send the .ado file. And please share results. I got curious about it. For those who are about matte papers only, looks serious.

André

I am not quite with you, when you say "still playing around with it's
color inks" ... and "apply the quad" ...

The colors, are they OEM or MIS? What do you mean by "apply the quads"?

Could you please give us the exact workflow again.

Thanks

Sure.Mine are OEM inks.Get a BW image, turn it to grayscale, the turn it to
duotone, make it a quadtone(makes sense in photoshop),apply the .ado "quad"
file, turn it back to RGB and that's it. Worked perfeclty for me in EAM with
a 1160,but not in non matte papers.
Let me know what happens.

André

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try (but I think I'd rather use PIGS)
