help me "catch up" - an old 1160 & sepia>neutral

2004-02-22 by frankg_photo

hi all,
I've been out of the loop for many, many months due to health issues
and so on. I've fired up my old 1160 with MIS sepia>neutral inkset in
a cis system. It was quite a struggle with blocked tubes and head and
so on... It's going ok again - I use Paul's orig. curves and Eclipse
190 Satine (is it still available ?)

Anyway, I do need to buy more ink, as one or two of my bottles are
almost empty, and I figure it's an opportunity for a change and a
boost of quality, and since I've been away for so long the available
printers, inks, curves and papers have most likely changed.

My initial look at some posts shows that the mis UT ink is probably
what I should order now. I figure I'd like to get refillable carts as
the cis is quite a lot of work. Also I dont need the extreme warmth
of the sepia>neutral set - I mostly never go beyond the warm curve.

Please offer your opinions, and confirm that these inks are good to
use on an old 1160, and also some pointers on purging this system &
installing that one. Can the 1160 still hold it's own in a 'quality'
comparison to newer printers ?

And while I'm writing, I'd like to invite you to view my updated
webpage at www.frankgross.com - let me know if you know of anyone
that'll employ me ...... :-)

thanks,
Frank

Yes, the UT is probably the one to use. It's as good as it gets in terms of
light fastness. I have good curves for the UT and 1160. The MIS new,
empty carts for the 1160 have always been of good quality. I've used them
for several years.

Not really; the 1280 is smoother, and the UT2 is more flexible. However, if
you're printing medium warm or cool matte prints, and you're not the type
who inspects the prints with a magnifying glass to see if there are dots,
the 1160 is still an excellent choice.

I am the type :-)
But......$ shortage dictates that I do the best I can with what I
have....so I will aspire to the smoother 1280 but will order ink (UT)
& carts for the 1160 for now - do you happen to have the specific
ordering info on hand? I admit not to having checked your link
(posted in your last post) yet and remember their site being quite a
maze

Frank,

MIS is building a new structure into its web page. Hopefully it'll make
navigation through it much easier.

I can only say this. I still use the 1160 and the UT CFS. The prints can be
beautiful if you're into the image and not the other stuff. I sold 8 prints
in a 2 month period (unframed and not matted)......all in 3 figures. Paul
has done a magnificent job as has MIS. I have a 1280 which I will eventually
put into B/W but I see no reason to do it yet. Keep the overhead down!
