QuadToneRIP and the 7600

QuadToneRIP and the 7600

2004-02-28 by chervinsky02144

Hi,

I just spent the morning installing Roy Harrington's QuadtoneRIP software
and have succesfully been making very nice prints on my Epson 2200 with
the UC inkset. So far, I am very impressed with the software.

I am, however, just using the 2200 as an exercise. The real purpose of
getting the software running is that I will have access to a 7600 printer next
weekend. Are there any profiles available for the 7600? If not, will I be able
to use the software with the 7600 without developing curves? Has anyone,
for example, tried using the 2200 curves?

Thanks very much.

Hi John,

I've done some initial work with a 7600. The one I'm using has
Photo Black not Matte Black ink loaded. Which kind of black ink
are you using? I can send you a couple of profiles for EEM using
this setup.

Hi Roy,

Thanks for the rapid and thoughtful response.

Unfortunately, I will have the 7600 set up with matte ink and HPR paper. It is
my hope to make large prints for gallery opening on 5/1. Can you tell me how
involved it is to make a B&W profile if I've never done it before? I suspect that
it is an order of magnitude more difficult with color inks. The main problem is
that I have only a 2 day window to use the printer. It's not the end of the world
if I use smaller prints from my 2200. Should I punt at this point?

Best,

-John

Hi John,

A two day window is short no matter what the issue, so I'd have a plan B
anyway. Modifying the 2200 profiles for the 7600 is probably not a
difficult task but would require a densitometer for the final linearization.
If your two day window can wait a little while I'm hoping to get some
profiles done on the 7600. Right now there seems to be a hangup in my getting
the inks switched from photo to matte.

Re: QuadToneRIP and the 7600

Roy,

I think then, that I will do the show on 4/1 (I incorrectly wrote 5/1) with the 2200
and my old workflow.

I am however still interested in experimenting with the 7600 at some point.
Please do drop me a line when you make progress. I do have a
densitometer.

On a side note, I am a bit shocked that the 7600 is not smart enoght to realize
to do a cleaning cycle only on the black print heads when changing from
matte to photo black or vice versa -- a tremendous waste of ink!

Thanks and take care.
