Photo Black or Matte Black UC with Imageprint?

Photo Black or Matte Black UC with Imageprint?

2004-02-29 by Ellie Kennard

Hi,

This was posted on the Imageprint list with no reply, so this is a
cross-posting. Apologies for those who may have read this before.

For those using UC inks, would photo black or matte black be the better
choice? I will be using the Epson 7600.

I would usually be printing on papers such as the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag,
especially for the BW work, but would like the option of using the lustre
or other photo papers for colour work. Is it possible to do both well
using one or the other?

What are your experiences?

Many thanks,

Ellie

My experience w/IP and the 9600 says that I must use matte black with the art papers, and photo black with the others. I believe there are density tests that indicate the photo black produces a rather inferior density on the 'art' papers. I have not seen any custom profiles that claim to overcome this issue.

Thanks Tom,

The cost of losing around $100 per time I change the cartridges
means in that case that I will restrict myself to using only the art
papers. Which works with Canvas, do you know? My guess is the matte
too?

There is quite a bit of difference in the printing characteristics of various canvas materials. Enough that some can be used with eith photo or matte black. Look on Colorbyte's web site for all of the ICC profiles they currently have. The listings will be by printer, ink, and paper type, as well as gray and color profiles. There are several canvas profiles out there, at least for the 9600. All of these profiles are downloadable for free for use with IP.
