Printer Settings

2004-03-02 by Trish McAuslan

Hi All
I have recently loaded Panther onto my MAC. I have an Epson 1270
printer and I am using the drivers for it which come with Panther
Now I am faced with a bewildering array of options. I either use the
printer for documents or for printing photos. Can anyone explain some
of these things to me and what setting I should be using for photos.

1	There is a huge range of paper but when I choose the appropriate
paper it does't seem to have any effect on the other settings - so
what effect does choosing the paper have?

2 Under Resolution there are the following options. What do they mean
and what should I choose when I want to print photos? (Some I
understand but I have included them all)
		360 DPI
		360 DPI Unidirectional
		720 x 360 DPI
		720 x360 DPI Undirectional
		720 DPI
		720 DPI Undirectional
		720 DPI High Quality
		720 DPI High Quality Unidirectional
		720 DPI Highest Quality
		1440 x 720 DPI
		1440 x 720 DPI Unidirectional
		1440 x 720 DPI Highest Quality

3 Gamma is set at 1.0
Should this be changed to 1.8?

Cheers
Trish

Trish,

You're using the GIMP / Unix open source driver(not an official Epson driver). Make
sure you select
"Epson 1270 USB" in print center (or something like that). Or you may need to install
the Epson driver still.

It adjusts the conversion from the incoming image data to the dot patterns,
mostly by varying the maximum ink load and the tradeoff between black and
C+M+K. I wouldn't be surprised if some choices (e.g., Premium Semigloss
versus Premium Luster) were actually identical, but there are important
differences, especially between the shiny and matte paper settings.

Always choose the highest resolution, highest quality.

You should either be using ColorSync or No Color Adjustment mode, depending
upon whether you want color space conversion to be done in the driver or
not. In either of those modes, you won't be presented with a gamma choice.

Thanks to those who replied with help.
I accept that the highest resolution etc is the best to choose but in
this case it takes about 30 mins for an A4 print so I guess the next
step is to experiment with the other settings

If you're talking about the resolution of the file you send to the printer, the max you need to send is 360 dpi. Anything over that is just slowing down you processing.
