Hahnemuhle Photo Rag yellowing + others xpost

2004-03-11 by Tim Atherton

Well - I just came across the infamous bright yellow Hahnemuhle Photo Rag
yellowing

I was sorting though a box of prints that were on mixed watercolour papers.
On one I noticed two bright yellow "tab" marks on the top and bottom edge.
These prints went from the printer, to a pile of prints to this box.

It's obvious from their shape that they do indeed come from the effects of
where a pack or roll was taped - this isn't "yellowing" (i.e. going
creamy) - it's the colour of a post-it note. Interestingly, I'm pretty sure
the colour has only appeared since the paper has been sitting out of the
packet after it was printed. The print has only been in cotnact with other
watercolour papers.

Sure glad I didn't sell that one

In addition - I've been undergoing my triennial cleanup here... In the
course of which I've come across a lot of old paper samples or half empty
packets of no longer used paper - from all sorts of manufacturers - Epson,
Canon, Lumijet, Weber Valentine, Legion etc etc. Thinking "oh I could
probably use some of those" I've looked through them - and a quite alarming
number of the different paper types have edge yellowing (of the "normal" not
photorag sort). It must be said that few of these were ever claimed as
"archival" papers, but the yellowing has happened mostly in the dark over
the last 4-5 years.
