QTR Question !

QTR Question !

2004-04-09 by Jeff Magidson

Hey Everyone!

I have been trying out the QuadTone RIP and so far I am quite
impressed! The supplied profiles are working quite nicely on my Epson
1280 loaded with UT2 inks. I love the blending curves option.

I have run in to one bug that someone may know the solution to:

I have made several Presets in the print dialog box but for some reason
none of my presets will stick. Meaning, I will configure all my
settings and save them as a preset but when I later go to use the
preset none of my selected settings come up. The settings that where
used for the last print stay in place no matter what preset I select. I
have lots of other presets for the Epson driver that work fine.

Also, since QTR does not employ the Epson driver does anyone know if my
ink usage is still reflected properly in the Epson Printer Utility when
using the QTR with pre filled carts?

Thanks for any ideas on the above!

-Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The Presets in Jaguar seem to have a weird combination of last value
and the preset value. One thing that I found that help often was to
have a different printer selected beforehand, then select which Preset
and then select the desired Printer. The changing of the Printer
seemed to reset the "last value" settings. I'm now using Panther and
the Presets are much more consistent with this version.

The ink usage is kept track of in the printer so, yes, you should be
able to use the Utility regardless of which driver you use.

VueScan Film Profiles

2004-04-09 by Tim Goodwin

Are there more film profiles in either the Standard or Pro version of
VueScan than the ones that are included with with the
evaluation/trial version ?

I mainly use Illford Pan-F or Delta 100 and apparently these are not
included with the trial version.

I am scanning with a Nikon Coolscan V and I started looking at
VueScan because the Nikon 4 scanning software clips the highlights
and was hoping VueScan would help eliminate this problem.

I have tried many substitute profiles including the generic setting
in VueScan but the Historam never looks quite right.

Thanks
Tim

The paid versions of Vuescan are identical to the trial version except
they don't put the $$$ all over the image.

It seems that profiles for specific b&w films just are not needed in
Vuescan. You will notice some very popular films (Tri-X, HP5, Plus-X,
FP4) lacking a profile. So long as you're capturing all the data
without the end points being clipped, you've got everything you need
to begin working in Photoshop.

Just concentrate on capturing all the data in the scan and then do
your adjustments in PS. My experience is that a great looking
histogram in the scan will probably lose some data, not what you want.
