Epson 9000 for quadtone

Epson 9000 for quadtone

2004-04-10 by Jon Zax

Does anyone on the list use a 9000 printer for making quadtone prints
of any kind ?

I have just resurrected my old 9000, just in time for Easter. So, do I
put it in a cave, nail it to a cross, bow down before it ?
What would you do ?

Give it a good nozzle cleaning, blow out the old inks, then fill it with
Piezotones. Buy some Photo Rag before the prices increase on the 15th.

Then again, since the 9000 was really setup for dye inks, check out the
Lyson archival dye quads. Lyson has some nice papers to match them too.
The combination has good ratings from Wilhelm, for what it's worth.

Well it would be a real shame if you didn't put that 9000 to work.
Spectacular Quadtones Are at your finger tips.
I do use Ergosoft Studio print Rip and the EyeOne Photospectrometer to
linerize the printer. With the eyeone device you can run and quad or hex ink you
like.
The eyeone studio print package is unfortunately 3500.00 or so. but state of
the art quality. In my opinion you will need some sort of software rip or
otherwise to lay the ink down properly.
Cheaper methods like the software from www.bwguys.com Would do you just
fine.
RGB curves could be made if you have the knowledge or plenty of time.

Jon,

You seem to have a nice collection of older large format printers :)

I use MIS inks with QuadToneRIP on my 7500 and the exact same setup
ought to work on a 9000. I get cool, warm, and sepia prints and
everything in between. Its a quadtone grays plus 2 toners.

I'm quite happy with Ultratone VM in the 9000 and custom curves
in the Wastach SoftRip to drive it.

But I'm an agnostic :-)
