Kevin,

I believe your workflow is a good one; I do virtually the same thing
except I start my amount up at 500 to really throw things out of whack
then slowly bring it back under control by sliding the amount down
towards the 200 range. By going way out to 500 it's easier for me to see
when I get it where I like it. Typically I'm between 170 and 250 on my
amount.

I only sharpen once and it is after I've flattened my image just before
printing. I never save my flattened, sharpened image so must redo
flatten and sharpening if I reprint.

A list member from another group sent this sharpening number combo which
works well to add contrast to images; I've used it a few times and found
it to be very good.
Amount 15%
Radius 65
Threshold 1

Subject: [Digital BW] unsharp workflow

I have read numerous unsharp mask workflows from a variety of sources.
Some say to perform the unsharp mask only once as the last touch
prior to printing. Some say use it twice.. once after scanning, and
once before printing. Some say three times with the third application
coming between the scanning and printing. Some say apply the unsharp
mask and then apply the FADE UNSHARP MASK. I have experiented with
multiple methods, sometimes with the effect of
photographic "progeria"( medical term for premature aging). It seems
that there as many workflows as there are experts.Currently, I
perform unsharp mask as a last procedure. I set the amount around
200, threshold around 1, and then play with the radius( .3 to 1) till
I see achieve some crispness without too much artifact. I was just
wondering if there is anyone out there who is pleased with whatever
method they are using and if they wouldn't mind sharing it.Also, do
any of the "remove grain" software fixes out there help reduce the
grain-effect of the unsharp mask filter?
thanks,
Kevin Monroe

On my website in the links section I have some actions that are a freely
distributable photoshop action called ultrasharpen, usable for either PC or
Mac. It usues several steps, so take a look at it, it's very
customisable/adjustable and worth a look. There is also a link there to the
authors website and a copy of his original PDF explaining the install and
procedure for varying the results. The Mac or PC version is a duplicate of
he original "precedure" adapted so that it can be run as a single action as
the original was only available for the PC platform. AFAIK the platform
independent version works with photoshop 5 and above.

Re: [Digital BW] unsharp workflow

oops forgot to mention that you can vary the effect considerably by fading
the sharpened layer it creates in the layer properties dialog and erasing
sections of undesirable sharpening using the layer mask on the after sharpen
layer. Very controllable in being able to effectivley implement the
selective sharpening which is already mosty confined to the edges within the
image.
Read the Orginal authors PDF manual included in the distro, it's very
informative. And also note that has a later commercial version availble via
the supplied link on the same page.

Those type of settings are often referred to as
"Local Contrast Enhancement".
I use that technique to add some zing to flat looking pics as a first
step, before other editing tasks such as cropping, resizing, etc.
There is a good article on that technique at Luminous Landscape
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast-enhancement.shtml
