BO on Canon i950

BO on Canon i950

2004-06-08 by rovision

Reading through Clayton's excellent pages re. BO and general B/W
printing, my old "art" printing memories came back! :) But since we
are in the 21st Century, and using this i950 printer, I was wondering
and need some clarifications on this BO process:
- as I understand BO stands for using ONLY the black ink cartridge
for printing grayscale images
- if this is true, than what happens with the rest of the inks, you
simply take the out? I guess that could imply some problems with the
printer itself.
- or, you can replace the remaining 5 slots with empty carts
and "force" print in BO only?
- as far as I know, even in grayscale printing normally used for
text, the "black" ink on paper is not 100% black, but a combination
of black and other, thus resulting in a color tinted B/W photo print
straight out of the application.
- since I guess is possible to replace the whole printing head in
this printer, would it be advisable to have a separate head only for
the B/W printing? If such, where or how can you find an extra head
since I don't think Canon is selling these separately?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I looked into the archives
for the past year and more, couldn't find any specific info on this
printer model. I understand people here are more Epson geared, but
even some general info re. my issues above would be helpful.

Thanks,
Ara Ghemigian

Hello Ara,

I don't know about Canon printers, but with Epson models you must
leave them there. The printer won't run without them. The printer
periodically does its own cleaning cycles, and a little bit of all the
inks gets injected through the head. So even though you do only BO
prints, eventually all the inks get used and have to be replaced.

Clayton

Hello Ara,

I don't have a Canon i950 but I think all printers have similar
characteristics; one of them being the choice of using only black
ink for making a print. I do have a Canon S750 that my son is using
and it can be put into Black Only mode from within the printer
driver. On one screen is the choice of Black/Color. On my old
printer, I needed to tell it that it was printing "text". Maybe some
of this will lead down an avenue of discovery withing the Printer
Driver settings.

Thanks for your reply Johnny. However this i950 doesn't have a
straight "black" only position for printing. All black on white text,
images, are printed using the color inks as well, that's why is
impossible to obtain a b/w print straight out of the printer's
driver.
I guess the original design idea was to build a color photo printer,
with less regard for b/w printing!

I did some tests last night, per Canon's tech support, in order to
eliminate the bluish tint that comes in grayscale mode printing. Even
with extreme settings in the color adjustments + grayscale mode,
nothing happens! Basically, the color manual settings have NO
influence in the grayscale printing! I don't know if this is a design
fault, but it doesn't work. Which means that there's a preinstalled
profile for text, b/w, grayscale printing, that can't be altered by
user.

So, after a bit more reading, I went to Lyson and installed some ICM
for this model. I printed some tests but I can't give a final comment
yet, since it was too late to view the prints in daylight. Sure, the
ICM is meant for some of their ink+paper combination, but I'd like to
see at this point if there is possible to produce a closer b/w print
just by using another profile. Sure, it should be possible to create
a profile in PS for ex., just that I wanted a quick image of what is
possible.

I'm not sure if I asked already this in this forum, meanwhile I've
found a Canon printing group, but would it be possible to replace all
5 color inks with black carts and use only BO printing this way??

Ara
PS - ha, I see I asked this in my original message already! :)

Hello again Ara,

The text mode is the choice to make to use only the black ink
cartridge. You may be able to choose the dotss per inch setting also
to get a higher resolution print. Coordinate this with the
information on Clayton Jones; website and you should be up and
running in no time (?)

Johnny, i950 doesn't have "text mode", only grayscale and color.
Thanks
Ara
