UT7 2200 Inks clogging bigtime

UT7 2200 Inks clogging bigtime

2004-06-19 by byten2003

I have had to use the epson matte black ink in place of the mis
because it hopelessly clogs. I was cleaning (used 25% of carts!!)
then suddenlyas the black cart was about all the way good it
completely stopped printing. I can take the cart out and roll it
back and forth and hear it has ink in it. As soon as I put the epson
matte black in it works perfectly on the first try. Unless mis gets
this ink to flow through epsons heads better I will need to decide
if I want to stay with mis and throw away nearly a third of all the
ink I buy from them or give up the black and white altogether.

Well, I am looking at the 11x17 portrait I was in the process of
making when I had so much trouble. Even with the epson matte black
cart mixed in with the UT7 this print is stunning.
Guess I'll just have to pony up the dough even if I eventually fry
the head on the 2200 and have to replace it. It is worth it to me
for the great black and white prints I am able to produce.

It seems like the big trouble occurs when I change from epson ink to
mis. Is it possible that even with the ut7 I should use a set of
flush carts in between?

I personally haven't had any significant clogging problems with the UT7
inks, but I'm using refilled Epson carts, so my setup is a little bit
different.

I have had some problems getting the print head aligned properly after I
got the UT7 inks though, although right now everything seems to work
reasonably well. Not sure if this was an ink problem or just my printer
being difficult.

I've never used flush carts when switching from Epson to MIS inks, but
it takes several cleaning cycles to get rid of all the color, so you
probably don't want to do the switch too often to avoid wasting ink.

Try to ask MIS if they have the refill friendly 2200 carts available.
Bob mentioned a few weeks ago that they were expecting to get those
cartridges any moment. If you refill from bottles the ink price is
reduced to around 1/5-1/10 of the prefilled cartridge price.

Also try their forum:

I find it's a great place to get support for their products.

I do suspect it has something to do with the ink cart itself. Seems
once I get it going it runs ok. I noticed that the ink cart mis
supplies is completely different from epsons carts on the inside.
Far less complex. Also mis has the funky little vent apparently
missing on the epson cart. I doubt epson would have put all the
complexity into their carts if not serving an important purpose.
I have numerous empty ink carts. Did you just buy CF ink and start
filling the carts yourself? How do you know when the cart is full
so that when the chip is reset the chip will not let the cart run
dry?
I am definitely interested in knowing how the fill process is done.

Thanks,
Charlie

I've written a tutorial on how to refill the Epson cartridges:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/message/45308

It takes some preparation and practice to get it right, but once the
cartridges are prepared they are very quick to refill and will last for
a very long time.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
