Poloarizing filters

Poloarizing filters

2004-06-23 by thebeecee55

I'm a new member here so I don't know if this question has been asked
or answered. I'm about to buy a polarizing filter for my new OLY5060
with the hope of getting more dramatic B&W (and color) pictures. Has
anybody had any experience with using this kind of filter keeping in
mind that this is NOT an SLR camera and that the only way to preview
the results of using the filter is to look at the LCD viewfinder
which is not always a reliable indicator of the results you are
hoping to receive. Thanks in advance for any info you can give
me.Thanks in advance.

Polarizing filters

Unless your eyesight and your LCD panel are very good, it may be hard to
tell what effect the rotation of the polarizing filter will have on the
image. Keep in mind that the filter will cut out about two f/ stops worth
of light, and that you may need to check the camera's manual to see if the
use of circular polarizer is required. It can certainly darken blue skies
on a sunny day and eliminate certain reflections, but there are more things
you can do to add drama in image editing than with the filter.

You can just hold the polarizer up to your eye to see what it will do
for your shot. No need to rely on the LCD.

I've found, on my Minolta DiMage 7, which has an electronic viewfinder, that
the display is a pretty good guide to exposure, although not to color. I've
found that turning the polarizer to max sky darkening is fine for B&W, but
generally overdone for color, so for the latter you'll have to learn how
much to back off the filter from max by looking at the image later on your
computer.

I agree with what the others have said. Polarizing filters take some getting used to -
the results will vary even depending on the time of day you use it (and the angle of
the sun). Late afternoon, and you can make the sky almost black (in color!) so practice
with it for a while to see what it can do.

Bruce-

I agree with all of the above comments...the one thing I will add is
that you may need a CIRCULAR polar filter. At least on the Nikon
Digital (I think on all digital) it is important to get circ only.
