Congratulations Roy

Congratulations Roy

2004-07-10 by Tyler Boley

There is a great article about Roy Harrington in the latest View
Camera Magazine. A lot of info on how QTR came about, as well as some
reproductions of his wonderful photography.
Of course I have to niggle a bit- quad tone inks were introduced 3
years ago???
I started using the original MIS set of quads in 1999, and I was
following already experienced people like Dan Culbertson and Steve
Meyers, so I'm not sure when they were introduced. There were other
less vocal people already using them at that time as well. I believe
Cone had a set for Iris in 1996. I switched to the Lyson quad inks
later in 1999 when they came to market for Epsons, then later the
Piezography sets, etc..
A little factual history folks!! This process has a past, with many
interesting characters and fits and starts.
Sorry for the diversion. Congratulations Roy, your work deserves to be
seen, and the community should be aware and grateful for your hard work.

Hi Tyler,

Thanks. BTW the 3 years ago was when I started using quad inks not when
they were introduced. I was still in the darkroom then.

Roy, I wasn't ragging on you believe me! It wasn't a quote from you,
it was the writer's haziness- "With the advent of quad tone inksets
three years ago..."
I see how it was meant to be taken.
I find the history of these developements interesting, and with the
constant influx of new people and fast evolution of digital methods,
it all get's lost too quickly. We all know a lot about the
developement of photographic materials, but times have changed.
Witness the fairly regular "what the heck is QTR?" question.
Having had some contact with some of the very impressive and talented
people that have contributed to where we are, I'm somewhat sensitive
to the issue. You should count yourself amongst that group.

Many kudos Roy for your recent recogniton in View Camera, I just read
the article last night.

The article mentioned that a Windows version of QTR might be released
this summer. Is their any truth to that?

Thanks,

Hi Don and all the other windows users.

I guess the cat is out of the bag. Yes, I've been working on the windows
version. The basic print engine is working. That means I can print with
existing profiles. Mac and PC profiles are 100% compatible and produce
identical results. The workflow is a little different in that you save a tiff
file and print from that rather than directly from Photoshop.

I expect to release a prelim version for the ultrachrome printers and ink
in the next couple of weeks. It's not a polished frontend but the print
results will be just fine. Creating new profiles on the PC will be farther
in the future but just copying Mac profiles should satisfy much of the need.

I'll be announcing progress here on the group.

Thanks,
Roy
