Depending on how big it iis, why not try hand luggage.

I've taken an SGI O2 by hand luggage in March '03 from LAX to Australia and
had no problems getting it on board. I don't know how big the R800 is, but
if you tell everyone it's fragile, if they ask that is, I don't think you'll
have any problems.

Besides no-one at all gave me any hassles about the size of my bag. Some
were intrigued by what is was, but that was all. And that was in addition to
a reasonable size camera bag, the tripod went in the checked baggage.
