getting to greyscale from color (was: B&W on the 4000 - Epson driver)

There now seem to be about a thousand ways of getting from RGB (or CMYK) to greyscale. If you're starting off with a B&W negative then desaturating isn't so awful, but if you're starting with a color image then there are definately better ways of getting there. There's the Lab/drop the a&b channels route, there's a really neat way of using Hue Saturation adjustment layers that Russel Brown cooked up, and then there's the channel mixer way, etc. John Paul Caponigro came up with an interesting action that he sent out a while back (I've got it around here somewhere...).
